| One of the largest cultural districts
in the country, the mile-wide expanse of arts and action that
makes up the Houston Museum District is not to be missed.
On September 16, visit sixteen of the museums for free and
zip among the fun on shuttles. In between eyeballing art and
bending your brain around interactive displays, drink in sites
such as the Mecom Fountain and the Dan Flavin light installation
at The Menil Collection’s Richmond Hall, or paddleboat
around McGovern Lake in Hermann Park. Mark your calendar!

At The
Children’s Museum of Houston, take the kids into
the Prototyping Lab, where they’ll rate ideas
for exhibits. Their feedback helps decide what’s
on display in the future. cmhouston.org
Get into the action and show off your smarts at The
Health Museum. Test your mental fitness in a round of
Mindball, a competitive game that measures
your brain’s alpha and theta waves while you control
a small ball. Each player puts on a “brain headband”
and tries to win by maintaining a calm, relaxed state
while pushing the ball to an opponent. thehealthmuseum.org

Texas (by way of Brazil) designer
Claudia Lobão makes jewels that get noticed. Her crocheted
beaded costume pieces and delicate multistrand bracelets dazzle.
Eva Longoria’s character on Desperate Housewives
sported her creations in six episodes during season two. For
a memento of your Museum District tour, look for Lobão’s
treasures at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston gift shop. mfah.org

| Often praised
as the most beautiful acre in Houston, the Lillie and
Hugh Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden is home to more than
25 masterworks from the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
Visitors can contemplate pieces by Henri Matisse and Frank
Stella amid carefully placed trees. To celebrate its twentieth
anniversary and the famed design of the garden created
over several years by sculptor and architect Isamu Noguchi,
the MFAH published a commemorative book, Isamu Noguchi:
A Sculpture for Sculpture. |
