UNIFIED COMMAND PLAN

The Unified Command Plan establishes the missions and geographic responsibilities among the combatant commanders. Among revisions to the plan to take place on Oct. 1, 2002:

  • U.S. Northern Command – new combatant command assigned to defend the United States and support military assistance to civil authorities.
  • Joint Forces Command – focus becomes transforming U.S. military forces; geographic responsibilities shift to Northern and European commands.
  • Russia and the Caspian Sea included in area assigned to European Command.
  • Antarctica included in area assigned to Pacific Command.

Sept. 11, 2001, events and the War on Terrorism that followed, plus the 2001 Quadrennial Defense Review, highlighted the need to adjust the current plan.
