New research shows that the microbes in your gut influence how much muscle you lose as you age. From our 30s onwards, most of us start losing muscle mass. We know exercise and nutrition matter, but scientists are uncovering a connection between our gut microbes and our muscles. It's called the gut-muscle axis, and it could change how we think about staying strong as we get older. This week, I’m joined by Claire Steves, Professor of Ageing and Health at King’s College London, whose research is at the forefront of understanding how the gut microbiome influences muscle health and ageing. I’m also joined by Professor Tim Spector, one of the world's top 100 most-cited scientists and my scientific co-founder at ZOE. Together, we explore: - Why losing muscle can put your health at risk - How scientists discovered that your gut microbes communicate with your muscles - Whether improving your gut health could help protect against muscle loss - Why eating more protein might not be the straightforward solution to maintaining muscle - How exercise can change your gut microbiome - And what this emerging science could mean for how we eat and train to stay strong throughout our lives By the end of this episode, you’ll understand the latest science behind the gut-muscle connection, and what it could mean for protecting your muscle health as you age. ZOE’s Chief Scientist, Professor Sarah Berry, is leading a major new study to understand why colorectal cancer is rising in younger people. Bowel cancer in people under 50 is increasing at an alarming rate, and scientists don’t fully understand why. Our diets, lifestyles and environments have changed dramatically over the past few generations, and colorectal cancer is a complex disease. Many factors could be contributing to its rise, and we need more research to understand what is happening. We’re very proud that Sarah is leading the charge as Chief Investigator of PROSPECT-UK, a global research effort investigating how diet, lifestyle, gut health and environmental exposures may influence the risk of developing colorectal cancer. And you can help. If you’re over 18, under 50 and living in the UK, you can take part by answering questions about your diet, lifestyle and health every six months. By bringing together data from hundreds of thousands of people, PROSPECT-UK could help researchers uncover the factors behind this worrying trend, and identify new ways to prevent disease. Find out more and take part via the link in the comments. And please share this with anyone you know who might want to get involved. You can also hear more from Sarah about the PROSPECT-UK study on BBC Panorama, linked below.

My guest this week believes one in three of us will develop an inflammatory disease. Inflammation is our bodys defence system. It fights infection, repairs injury, and has kept humans alive throughout our history. But the same process that protects us can turn against us when it becomes chronic. And researchers are directly linking chronic inflammation to fatigue, weight gain and ill health. So what can we do about it? This week, I’m joined by Professor Luke O’Neill, Professor of Biochemistry at Trinity College Dublin and one of the world’s top 1% of immunologists. His research focus is immunometabolism, the study of how cellular metabolism and the immune system interact. Together, we explore: - Why your immune system can end up attacking your own body - The link between chronic inflammation, fatigue and low mood - If seed oils, red meat and gluten are as inflammatory as influencers say - How the microbes in your gut shape your immune response - Whether anti-inflammatory supplements are worth your money - And the three things Luke would tell anyone to start doing today for better long-term health By the end of this episode, youll understand what the science says about inflammation, and what to eat to bring it down. Ever wondered what top nutrition scientists put in their shopping basket? Wonder no more. This week, Professor Tim Spector and Professor Sarah Berry reveal exactly what they buy in the supermarket, and why. Tim is one of the world's top 100 most-cited scientists and my scientific co-founder at ZOE. Sarah is Professor of Nutrition at King's College London, Chief Scientist at ZOE, a world leader in large-scale human nutrition studies - and a busy working mum. The supermarket is full of hundreds of breads, endless rows of snacks, and a thousand different yogurts. And almost every one of them carries a health claim: high protein, sugar-free, gluten-free, low-fat, gut-friendly, immune-boosting. We've never had more choice, or less idea what to put in the basket. So together, Tim and Sarah uncover: - What to look for on a loaf of supermarket bread - Which nutrition labels on the front of the pack are worth paying attention to - Why most supermarket kefirs and kombuchas aren't doing what they promise - How swapping to the healthiest versions of these foods can affect your long-term health - And the six rules they use to shop well without reading every label By the end of this episode, you'll know exactly what to reach for on your next shop, and what to leave on the shelf. “It goes back to the biggest breakthrough in human health over the last 20 years: the discovery of the microbiome. Twenty years ago, we knew microbes lived in our gut, but they were largely thought to be passive passengers. Research has since shown they play an extraordinary role in our health.” — Jonathan Wolf, Co-Founder & CEO, ZOE “GLP-1 therapies are a medical revolution. Having practised medicine for 35 years, they're the biggest breakthrough of my career for people living with obesity. They've shown that obesity is fundamentally driven by hunger signals in the brain rather than simply metabolism or genetics.” - Tim Spector, MD, Scientific Co-Founder, ZOE Our conversation explored two major shifts reshaping how we think about long-term health: the rise of GLP-1s and our growing understanding of the gut microbiome. From personalised nutrition and AI-powered guidance to sustainable behaviour change, it highlights a wider question for the healthspan economy: how can breakthrough medicines and better nutrition work together to improve health over the long term? This interview forms part of the research for our upcoming special report, The Healthspan Economy, due to be published in The Washington Post in October 2026. One-third of older adults who suffer a hip fracture die within 12 months. Another third will never be able to care for themselves again. Hip fractures are the most common serious injury in older adults, but most of us barely think about our bones until they break. Your skeleton isn't a rigid frame just carrying you through life. Bone is a living tissue that constantly rebuilds itself, communicates with your other organs, and plays a vital role in your immune health. And unlike teeth, you can regrow bone, which means declining bone health isn't inevitable. There are things you can start doing today to protect your bones later in life. This week, I'm joined by Professor Elaine Dennison, rheumatologist and Professor of Musculoskeletal Epidemiology at the University of Southampton. She's a world-leading expert in bone health, and her research explores how our bones change throughout life and how best to protect them from childhood to old age. Together, we uncover: - Why bone is one of the busiest organs in your body - The connection between your gut, muscles and bones - What puts bone health at risk, and how to spot it early - How your skeleton changes at every stage of life - What you can start doing today to build stronger bones - And whether the gadgets promising better bone health are worth your time By the end of this episode, you'll think completely differently about your skeleton, and know how to look after the bones that look after you. • Four scientific studies in the last decade have transformed how nutrition scientists understand food. This week, Professor Tim Spector and Professor Sarah Berry explain why these studies challenged everything they used to believe, and what it means for how we should be eating today. Tim is one of the world's top 100 most-cited scientists and my scientific co-founder at ZOE. Sarah is Professor of Nutrition at King's College London, Chief Scientist at ZOE, and a world leader in large-scale human nutrition studies. Together, they reveal: - The study that produced the biggest surprise in modern nutrition research - What scientists are discovering about common additives in our food - Why traditional measures of what makes a food unhealthy are now out-dated - And why some foods classified as ultra-processed may not carry the same health risks as others By the end of this episode, you'll understand why the dietary guidelines we grew up with contradict the latest evidence, and what that means for your food choices.
