  • You may never know the name of the person who designed the digital service you rely on. Often, that is the point! The best technology quietly works when people need it most, and behind it are professionals making decisions about resilience, accessibility, trust and the people those systems ultimately serve. In our latest Fellow Spotlight, we celebrate Indrajit Sen FBCS, Sr Tech Architect at IBM, whose career has been built around exactly that kind of impact. Across 24 years in enterprise technology, Indrajit has helped shape large-scale digital commerce platforms, including leading architecture work on Boots’ digital commerce modernisation. But what makes his story particularly powerful is the philosophy behind the technology: success is not simply what gets built, but what it enables for the people using it. And his contribution does not stop with the systems themselves. Through teaching, mentoring and sharing his experience with the next generation, Indrajit reflects something central to what BCS Fellowship represents. Fellowship recognises professionals whose influence extends beyond a job title. People who build responsibly, share what they know and strengthen the profession for those coming next. For Indrajit, that recognition comes with responsibility too: to keep contributing, keep mentoring and keep giving back to the profession that shaped his career. Join us in celebrating Indrajit Sen FBCS. #BCSFellows #FBCS #TechnologyLeadership #EnterpriseTechnology #DigitalTransformation #DigitalProfession

  • We're excited to introduce AI&Us, a new podcast from BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, bringing together Dame Wendy Hall, Regius Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Web Science Institute at the University of Southampton, and Sue Black OBE Black OBE, Professor of Computer Science and Technology Evangelist at Durham University.   Between them, Wendy and Sue have spent decades at the forefront of computing, championing innovation and working for greater diversity in technology.   Now, in this BCS podcast, they're exploring AI’s opportunities, its risks and impact on society, from a perspective that’s a little different to the ‘tech bros’.   Join Wendy and Sue for the very first episode, in which they question how seriously we should take popular fears about The Terminator.   Dame Wendy Hall said: “AI is going to profoundly impact all our lives in some incredibly brilliant ways – particularly in health and education, and in tackling the challenges of climate change and the environment. It will only become dangerous if we let it become dangerous. That is my firm belief.”   Professor Sue Black said: “So many of the technologies we use every day have been shaped by a relatively narrow group of people. AI gives us an extraordinary opportunity to broaden that perspective: to identify the problems that matter most to us and create products and solutions that address them.”   Available now on YouTube and your favourite podcast platforms. • What does it take to win a BCS Lovelace Medal? Last year, Professor Mirella Lapata received the 2025 BCS Lovelace Medal for Computing Research for pioneering work in natural language processing and AI. Her research has helped advance how machines understand and generate human-like narratives across text and other forms of media, contributing to technologies that are now part of everyday life. That is the kind of impact the Lovelace Medal exists to recognise. But impact can take many forms. It might be breakthrough research. It might be transforming how computing is taught. It might be work that changes practice across industry, academia or society. So, who should be recognised next? Nominations are open for the BCS Lovelace Medal 2026, celebrating exceptional contributions to computing research and computing education. Find out more about the medal and eligibility: https://hubs.ly/Q04z76PB0 📅 Nominations close 31 December 2026 #BCSLovelaceMedal #Computing #ComputerScience #TechResearch #ComputingEducation

  • 📢 We’re absolutely delighted to announce that all four BCS AI Confidence modules are now live and available free to all UK schools and colleges.   In a survey of 9,200 teachers in England commissioned by The Royal Society*, only 14% reported that they were confident across all three dimensions of AI literacy. These are:  - Understanding how AI works  - Using AI safely and responsibly  - Critically engaging with AI’s ethical, societal, and civic implications     Sir Anthony Seldon also highlighted in a recent BBC interview*, that schools need greater support and teacher training to navigate the rapid adoption of AI. Equipping educators and students with the skills to use AI safely, responsibly and effectively is increasingly essential.    Sound familiar? Here’s how we can support you and your learners    AI Confidence is a series of free, CPD modules created by our experts at BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT in partnership with the Hg Foundation, Microsoft Elevate and Cognizant. Here you’ll find practical training to help educators understand AI, make informed decisions about its use and support students in an AI-enabled world.  🔹 Getting Started with AI in Education: understand the fundamentals and explore safe, practical ways to use AI.  🔹 Exploring AI in the World of Work: help students understand how AI is changing jobs, recruitment and the skills employers value.  🔹 AI for School Leaders: build the judgement needed to evaluate AI tools, manage risks and introduce AI responsibly across your organisation.  🔹 Supporting Inclusion with AI: explore how AI and assistive technologies can help remove barriers to learning and communication.  Register for free and explore all four modules: https://hubs.ly/Q04yT5B_0     Read about The Royal Society survey: https://hubs.ly/Q04yT5_P0  Read the BBC article: https://hubs.ly/Q04yT5Bc0    #AIConfidence #AIinEducation #DigitalSkills #Education #aiCPD

  • AI adoption isn’t waiting for organisations to catch up. The challenge now is whether organisations have the skills, judgement and governance to use it well.   Our new AI Skills and Adoption Report 2026 explores what technology professionals are seeing inside their organisations as AI moves further into everyday work. It was clear there is unmet demand for training, oversight and professional standards needed to support responsible adoption. The findings from our research with members point to an important tension. Organisations want to realise the potential of AI, but adoption by individuals is moving faster than much of the governance needed to make it effective, trusted and sustainable.   Swipe through some of the key findings from the research, then explore the full BCS AI Skills and Adoption Report 2026 👉 https://hubs.ly/Q04yjhKj0   #ArtificialIntelligence #AISkills #ResponsibleAI #DigitalSkills #TechnologyLeadership
