Ben Fry on X: "The name “Processing” is a play on the idea of sketching & creating and how that fits into one's “process,” as well as the idea of computers as machines that process information. But with that in mind, it's intended to be one tool in larger process—a means not an end in itself."

I spend so, so much of the time working on @ProcessingOrg focused on improving how things work while making sure that any updates/improvements don't break old code. It's nice to hear when it works! Usually I only hear back when it doesn't.

So we have a lot of people who might use it heavily for a day, a week, a month, and then put it down for six months or two years. And with that audience in mind, things still need to work when they return to it. There isn't time to rewrite code, reinvest in relearning, etc.

Of course it doesn't always work, and it's especially a place where contributed Libraries, Modes, and Tools—the lifeblood of the project in many ways—work against us. But I think it's also been key to our longevity, and the continued participation of the community.
