  • 2 All-Silk Goods

These must contain no other textile fibre, such as cotton, linen, wool, ramie, rayon or any other. Fabrics called "all-silk" are commonly adulterated by means of weighted dyes in both warp and weft. The limit of weighting is commonly given as 50 and 100 per cent (warp and weft), the percentage being based on the return weight as against the weight of the natural silk handed to the dyer, which is, of course, 16-oz. to the lb. Actually the percentage of weighting is more, owing to the "boiling-off" losses by the removal of the natural gum.

  • 3 Armure Wool Fabric

Made in wide widths for use as dresses, coats, etc., good quality yarns, 72-ends, 68 picks per inch. The warp is usually end and end mohair and worsted, two-fold yarns, such as 2 / 60's or 2 / 40's - The weft is single worsted 26's to 32's. Other qualities are made from one kind of warp, but in right and reverse twist, and up to about loo-ends per inch. Cotton weft is used in the cheapest cloths, about 48's yarn dyed black. The photograph shows a typical wool Armure fabric made in a fancy rep weave 84 X 68, 2 / 60's botany / 30's botany. A heavy cloth is also termed "Armure", used for drapery and curtains, woven with brocade figuring on the armure weave ground, and all-wool yarns

  • 4 Chlorinated Wool

Wool when treated with hydrochloric acid has a high gloss, a greater affinity for dyes, but is rather harsh in feel. The process is to first clear away all greasy matter very thoroughly, then steep in hydrochloric acid solution (cold) for 20 minutes. It is next worked for 10 minutes in a solution of bleaching powder and again treated in the hydrochloric acid and finally thoroughly washed. This process is used to give a silk-like gloss to the wool. Chlorinated wool does not felt, so if woven with ordinary wool, crimped effects are obtained through one yam felting and the other not. It also takes up more dye than ordinary wool, so that two-colour effects could be obtained by dyeing in the same bath.

Kelat from Beluchistan, is inferior and shorter in staple than Kandahar. Poa Pathan is similar. Kashmir goat wool resembles poor sheep wool. • 6 Indian Wool

Much of the wool classed as East Indian is collected from the adjacent countries. Indian wools are mostly sent to Liverpool, where they are sold by auction every two months. All contain much grey hair. Joria is the finest type. The best sort gives a springy, full yam and cloth, but the lower sorts are coarse and burry. Kashmir goat wool resembles poor sheep wool. Tibet wool is brought over the frontier, sold, and packed in Calcutta. This wool requires much sorting. The export has increased largely in recent years owing to the opening up of the country. The Punjab Government has bestowed some attention on the improvement of the indigenous breed of sheep, and merino rams are said to have fared well in two districts. The wool is also sorted, graded, and washed in these towns. Kashgar wool from Chinese Turkestan is a valuable white, silky, soft -wool, transported into Russia for the manufacture of woollen cloths. • 9 Grease Wool

Wool as it comes from living sheep with the grease still in it. About 70 per cent of the wool in London is in the natural or greasy condition. The fleeces contain all the natural secretions which are present on the fibres during life, in addition to the whole of the yolk and suint within the fibres, and the dust, sand, earth and vegetable matter which have lodged in the fibres during their growth. These maintain the natural properties of the wool during transit and also facilitate the process of manufacture.
