If there’s one thing you can count on when it comes to 9-1-1, it’s that the ABC drama will kick off its new season with a crazy disaster scenario — and Season 10 is no different.

After traveling to space last year, the show is going underground on Oct. 15, when a sinkhole leads to an unlikely volcano in Los Angeles. “A whole tour bus goes into [the sinkhole], and one of our main characters is, unfortunately, in a really bad place when the thing erupts,” showrunner Tim Minear told TV Insider.

Read on as we review everything we know about the upcoming season, including how Athena and Buck are handling their new roles as detective and dad, respectively.

What happened in Season 9?

9-1-1 - “Pick Your Poison” - Athena is pulled into a mysterious murder investigation when a man arrives at the station to report his own death. Meanwhile, the 118 races to the site of a car crash involving a mother and son. THURSDAY, MARCH 26 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT) on ABC. (Disney/Christopher Willard) ANGELA BASSETT

Athena’s life-or-death close call in the season finale led the officer to realize that she needed “a change of pace” so she became… a detective instead! Her daughter, May, also started on a new career path in a nursing program. Elsewhere, Buck decided to officially foster his biological son, Theo, after both of the little boy’s parents tragically died in an accident.

What will happen next in Season 10?

In keeping with the show’s premiere disaster tradition, the season will open with — what else? — a sinkhole-turned-volcano in the City of Angels. “The 118 faces an earth-shattering emergency that shakes the city of Los Angeles to its core,” reads the official description. Meanwhile, Athena is partnered with Det. Newell (Rick Otto), but she’s “still finding her footing as a detective” and “leans on instinct to crack a mysterious new case.” Elsewhere, “May finds her own confidence in a new job.”

9-1-1: “I Got You Babe” - Buck is faced with his past after an electrical emergency call. Meanwhile, Maddie learns to navigate her working relationships now that she has become a supervisor. THURSDAY, APRIL 30 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT) on ABC. (Disney/Christopher Willard) OLIVER STARK

As for new dad Buck, he’s finding that parenting is both rewarding and challenging. “It’s heartwarming and very hard, and he’s making some mistakes,” Minear described to TV Insider, adding that Buck’s single-dad pal, Eddie, is “doing what he can to mentor him a little bit in that area, which causes some tension and friction.”

On the romance front, May and Ravi are still going strong, and the nurse that May saw get arrested, Ian Bradley (Tre McBride), will be back, Minear shared with Entertainment Weekly. And it seems that our wish that Athena find a new romance will go unfulfilled for now: Minear told TVLine that he’s “not currently considering” giving the character a new love interest.

Will there be a crossover with 9-1-1: Nashville?

9-1-1: NASHVILLE - “Hell and High Water” - A tornado’s path leads the Station 113 team to an intense rescue at a water tower. Ryan and his wife reach a turning point, while Dixie has an assignment for Blue. Cammie coaches a distressed teenager through her mother’s childbirth. THURSDAY, OCT. 16 (9:00-10:00 p.m. EDT) on ABC. Minear hinted at a “little mini crossover” during the volcano arc, but it will take place on Nashville rather than the mothership series, he revealed to EW. (Perhaps more interestingly, someone from the cancelled Fox spinoff 9-1-1: Lone Star might be visiting Music City! “We also want to do another big OG crossover,” Nashville showrunner Rashad Raisani told TVLine. “And I’ve been saying from day one that I want to bring some Lone Star people in, and that’s in the works in a big way.”)

When will Season 10 premiere?

New episodes begin unspooling Thursday, Oct. 15, at 8/7c on ABC.

Is there a trailer for Season 10?

The lava is flowing hot and dangerously in the below preview, which also finds Athena potentially trapped underground.
