Cinnabar Island Gym Guide (How to Beat Blaine) | Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen

If you reach Cinnabar Island in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen and head straight to the Cinnabar Island Gym, you're greeted with a locked door. The Secret Key is hidden inside the Pokémon Mansion to its left, and is required for access. Head there to find the key, then come back to the Gym.

Inside, there are six rooms to get through before reaching Blaine. The puzzle is a bit different than previous gyms. Instead of navigation, it's a set of trivia questions. You can battle each of the trainers to open the doors to get into the subsequent room, or you can answer questions at the trivia stations to skip the fights.

How to Prep for the Cinnabar Island Gym

Blaine and the Cinnabar Island Gym trainers have Fire-type Pokémon. Load up on Water-types before you head over here. It's recommended that your Pokémon are roughly Level 40-45 at this point. Fire-type Pokémon are weak against Water-, Ground-, and Rock-type Pokémon. Blaine's four Pokémon have tough Fire-type moves, so you need to be ready with items to heal burns.

Players that started with Squirtle and now have Blastoise are at an advantage here. Teach it HM03 (Surf) to help deal more damage. If you started with either Charmander or Bulbasaur, a good option is Lapras. You should have picked up a Lapras at the Silph Company building. Like Blastoise, it can do a ton of damage by teaching it HM03 (Surf). For a Ground-type Pokémon, Dugtrio with Dig and Magnitude or Marowak with Bonemerang work decently well. You may have found a Dugtrio early on in Diglett's Cave. If not, head back there to catch one and level it up. Marowak can be evolved from Cubone, which is found at the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town.

It's recommended to battle the trainers, because it's a good way to boost your Pokémon's experience points.
