The wait is finally coming to an end: GTA 6 launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. If you want to hit the streets of Vice City on launch day, it's worth getting everything ready ahead of time. Fortunately, you can already take care of most of the preparation. From making sure you have enough storage space to adding funds to your wallet, this checklist will help make sure your console is ready for GTA 6.

Free up space on your SSD

One of the most frustrating surprises on launch day is finding out that your console doesn't have enough free storage space. Rockstar hasn't announced the final file size of GTA 6 yet, but given the scale of the game, it's a good idea to free up some space now. This could easily end up being one of the biggest games ever released.

Take a critical look at the games currently installed on your PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. If there are games you haven't touched in months, you can safely delete them or, if you plan to play them again later, move them to suitable external storage.

Once Rockstar makes the preload available, you'll want your console to be able to start downloading immediately. It's therefore worth deciding now which games won't make the cut. You should also leave some additional free space for updates and any temporary files that may be required during installation.

The preload starts on November 12

There is good news for gamers who pre-order the game: you won't have to download tens of gigabytes on November 19 before you can start playing. Rockstar has confirmed that the digital preload for GTA 6 begins at midnight local time on November 12, 2026. Anyone who has pre-purchased the game can therefore download it a full week before release.

That does mean your console needs to be ready when the preload begins. Check that automatic downloads and updates are enabled, so GTA 6 can download while you're asleep or at work. Physical copies are also a little different this time around. The physical version comes as a code in a box, with the code becoming available from November 12.

Check your internet connection

You probably don't want to download a game the size of GTA 6 over a slow or unstable connection. If your console normally uses Wi-Fi, it doesn't hurt to check whether the connection is strong enough where your console is located.

If you can connect your PS5 or Xbox Series X|S using an Ethernet cable, that's generally the most stable option. This can be especially useful if you want to start the download as quickly as possible on November 12. Most importantly, don't wait until launch day to discover that your console can't connect to the internet or that automatic downloads are disabled.

Add funds to your wallet

There's another practical step you can take now: make sure you have enough funds in your PlayStation or Xbox account. The Standard Edition of GTA 6 costs €79.99 on both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Ultimate Edition costs €99.99. If you buy the physical version, you'll need to purchase the upgrade to the Ultimate Edition digitally.

You can pay the required amount directly using your preferred payment method, but a digital gift card is another simple option. This allows you to add the amount you need to your account in advance.

Startselect, for example, offers dedicated GTA 6 gift card options. For the Standard Edition, you can purchase a €79.99 PlayStation gift card or an €80 Xbox gift card. For the Ultimate Edition, there are €99.99 PlayStation and €100 Xbox gift cards. The digital codes are delivered instantly, after which you can add the funds to your wallet.

Another option is Recharge.com, where you can also purchase digital PlayStation and Xbox gift cards and receive the code by email. This lets you top up your wallet in advance without having to set up a payment method on launch day. It also means you can set aside a fixed amount specifically for GTA 6. On launch day, you'll only have to purchase the game itself if you haven't already done so.

Check your account

It may sound obvious, but it's also worth checking that you're signed in to the correct PlayStation Network or Microsoft account. This is particularly important if you use multiple accounts on your console, as you definitely don't want to accidentally purchase GTA 6 on the wrong account.

If you're using digital codes, also make sure they match the region of your account. PlayStation codes in particular are often region-specific. If you've already purchased GTA 6 digitally, you won't need to buy it again on November 19. Just make sure your console and storage are ready for the preload.

Don't forget your system software

Your console itself needs to be up to date as well. Check that your PS5 or Xbox Series X|S is running the latest system software. The same goes for automatic game updates. The last thing you want is to sit down on November 19 with your controller in hand, only to discover that you first have to install a major system update.

If you take care of all of this ahead of time, you'll only have one thing left to worry about: where you're heading first in Vice City.
