How do I get started with Session Replay and Heatmaps?

To use Session Replay and Heatmaps, you'll need to be on the latest version of Mixpanel’s JavaScript SDK. From there, setup takes just a few minutes:

  • Session Replay requires a one-line configuration update to begin recording sessions.

  • Heatmaps require an additional line to collect click data (record_heatmap_data: true).

You’ll start seeing visual insights in your Mixpanel project shortly after implementation. To get started with Session Replay, contact our team and we'll be happy to assist.

How do Heatmaps and Session Replay work together?

Heatmaps are built on top of Session Replay, so the two work hand in hand. While replays help you watch how individual users navigate your site, Heatmaps surface broader click patterns, helping you spot trends, dead zones, and friction areas across all sessions. Together, they tell a more complete story of what users are doing and why.

What types of apps are supported?

Session Replay is currently avaialble for Web and Mobile Apps (native iOS and Android).

How does Mixpanel protect user privacy?

Session Replay and Heatmaps are private-by-default. By default, we mask all screen, text, images, video content, and user inputs to help protect user data.

Mixpanel complies with major privacy regulations like GDPR and HIPAA, and adheres to ISO 27001 standards for data security.

How much does it cost?

Session Replay is free to try for customers on Free, Growth, and Enterprise plans.

For customers on Enterprise plans, custom amounts are available for additional cost. Heatmaps are available at no extra cost, and don’t count toward your MTUs or billable events. To learn more, please reach out to Sales or your Mixpanel rep
