Kubernetes Forum Bengaluru 2020 Highlights
My curation on the Kubernetes Forum Bengaluru organized by CNCF on Feb 17, 2020.
Sponsor booths
Linode
Linode provides Managed Kubernetes Clusters which claims to have predicatable pricing and cloud simplified which is less than existing big Cloud Providers. You can compare Linode server costs with other Cloud Providers in their Estimator — Sounds competitive, Let’s wait and watch!
Sify
The digital arm of sify.com which provides cloud native services across multiple cloud provides and devops toolchain for Enterprise and Cloud Native customers. [Site]
IBM Cloud
Needs no introduction. They gave a free e-book copy of “Kubernetes in the Enterprise: Deploying and Operating Production Applications on Kubernetes in Hybrid Cloud Environments” once registered at their booth — Give and take policy!
Rancher
Rancher provides lightweight Kubernetes distribution (K3s) which is helpful in running Kubernetes on IoT & Edge applications — I have always wanted to try K3s, will try it soon…!
srijan:
srijan: provide Digital Transformation service for API Modernization, Cloud Engineering and Data Intelligence — The company name signifies ‘Creation’. A creative team..!
Soda Foundation
The newest Open Source unified autonomous data management framework for data mobility from edge to core to cloud — Whatever that means..! :)
There were other booths as well, however I did not mention them here as most of them are covered in my other blogs as part of various events/conferences.
Topic wise breakdown
Keynote: Hiding in the Dark
Dan Kohn, Executive Director, Cloud Native Computing Foundation
Using Minecraft reference, Dan overlaid the foundation of Kubernetes and the ecosystem in the opening keynote. The hall was massive and fully occupied
Keynote: Role of Architecture in Building a Community
Davanum “Dims” Srinivas, Chairperson of Kubernetes Forum Bengaluru & Staff Engineer II, VMware
Dims gave a neat picture on how Kubernetes has been build solely by the community and how control loops in kubernetes helps the architecture to self heal.
Sponsored Keynote: Kubernetes Deployment Made Easy for Complex Applications
Girish Dhanakshirur, Distinguished Engineer & CTO, IBM Hybrid Cloud
Keynote: Containerizing Deep Learning Using Kubeflow on AWS
Sukanya Mandal, Data Scientist, Capgemini
An intense keynote with Machine Learning usecases with Kubernetes (kubeflow) on Amazon EKS — Too much was going on here.
Sponsored Keynote: Multi What???? Multi-cloud, Multi-cluster, Multi-tenanted K8s
Gaurav Mehta, Field Engineer, Rancher
Keynote: Keeping Your Data in Kubernetes with Vitess
Sugu Sougoumarane, CTO, PlanetScale
I had heard Sugu speak at the Software Engineering Daily podcast few years ago. Getting to know how Youtube’s MySQL solution (now Vitess) is helping the open source community to use the first truly cloud native database!
Auditing in Kubernetes 101
Nikhita Raghunath, Loodse
Got to know about a new resources AuditPolicy, AuditSink for controlling what to log in the Kubernetes cluster for auditing purposes.
Service-Mesh for Enterprise Multi-Tenant Kubernetes
Sudeepto Roy & Venkatesh Kinthali, JP Morgan Chase
A neat picture of Service Mesh and how we can leverage multi-tenancy in enterprise to achieve Service Mesh usage.
Enforcing Standards in CI/CD Using Open Policy Agent
Gaurav Gajkumar Chaware, InfraCloud
One of the most required admission controller for enforcing standards within the Kubernetes Cluster and Outside the cluster when we are building applications which need to follow some standards and practices.
Modernizing Monolithic Application: Isolation Before Independence
Vinothini Raju, gopaddle
Great session on how shifting a Monolithic application to kubernetes was achieved using Apache OfBiz framework (ERP, CRM) by leveraging Route Level segregation and Resource benefits.
A Safari into the KubeVerse
Dhananjay Sathe, Rapyuta Robotics
A walkthrough on the Kubernetes universe right from Kubectl to the different Kubernetes plugins. Neatly done!
Intelligent Workload Re-shuffling to Minimize Idle Resources Across Cluster
Yash Bhatnagar & Hemani Katyal, VMware
One of the best tools I have seen in the open source ecosystem for shuffling workloads for optimizing cluster utilization. Take a look at the github project for more — https://github.com/ybhatnagar/kube-tetris
Kubernetes Ingress: Do More with Less
Sudipta Biswas & Monotosh Das, VMware
What are the different problems with IngressController and how can we overcome them using Concur’s CRDs (custom resource definitions) along with Load Balancing across multiple clusters using GSLB.
