Machine Coding#3: Building an Infinite Image Carousel with Vanilla JavaScript

--

An image carousel looks simple on the surface:

Click Next → show the next image.

But once you add infinite looping, autoplay, navigation dots, keyboard support, and smooth animations, a few interesting frontend problems appear.

Press enter or click to view image in full size

One of the most common problems is:

What should happen when we move from the last image back to the first?

A naive implementation often produces an ugly animation where the carousel suddenly moves backward across all the images.

In this article, we’ll build a smooth, infinite image carousel using HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript.

What We Are Building

Our carousel will support:

  • Next / Previous buttons
  • Navigation dots
  • Infinite looping
  • Smooth transitions
  • Autoplay
  • Pause on hover
