the top level .gitignore ignores .swp files. if you have a .swp file under cmds/, it won't be ignored. cmds/.gitignore contains:
# Ignore binaries (files without extensions)
*
!*.*
!*/
.bb/
bb/
which i think says "ignore everything" (to catch files without extensions), and then "don't ignore everything with an extension". which brings back the .swp files.
one option: manually add the contents of the top-level .gitignore to cmds/.gitignore. though it's a little annoying, since you still are overriding people's global .gitignore. (i think).
