I'm on Windows. Upon updating to 2026.6.0, I would run Jupyter notebooks in VS code using a conda env as my kernel. After updating, whenever I started the kernel, I could run a few code blocks but within ~1 min (or immediately upon running certain code blocks), the kernel would crash with exit code 0xC06D007F and no further explanation.
Tracing the issue found that upon starting the kernel, os.environ['PATH'] would contain
C:\\Users\\[myusername]\\anaconda3\\envs\\[myenvname]
but would be missing entries like the following, which are present when I simply activate the environment in an Anaconda Prompt and enter python:

Manually adding these to the path with the following bandaid code prevented the kernel from crashing.

Setting python.useEnvironmentsExtension to False in VSCode settings also appeared to resolve the issue.
My hypothesis is that native libraries that rely on the environment's DLLs then fail to load.
The Python extension logs this when the Jupyter extension asks for the activated variables:

The Jupyter extension then logs Failed to get activated conda env vars (92–115 ms) and Unable to determine site packages path, and launches the kernel anyway with the un-activated environment. Meanwhile the Python Environments extension has already resolved the correct paths in the same session:

So the activation command the Python extension builds uses bare activate / conda activate <name> and appears to ignore the paths the envs extension resolved (and my python.condaPath). The command only works if Anaconda's condabin or Scripts is on PATH, which the Anaconda installer does not do by default.
Steps to reproduce:

On Windows x64, install Anaconda with the default options (so conda is not on the global PATH), and create a conda env with numpy/scikit-learn (MKL build) plus ipykernel.
2. In VS Code 1.140.0, install the Python (2026.6.0), Python Environments (1.38.0) and Jupyter (2025.9.1) extensions. Leave python.useEnvironmentsExtension unset.
3. Open a folder and a .ipynb, and select the conda environment's kernel.
4. Run a cell that prints the PATH entries containing conda. Only the environment root is present, with no Library\bin or Scripts:

6. Set "python.useEnvironmentsExtension": false, fully restart VS Code, and rerun. The PATH is complete and the cell runs.
Workarounds
- Setting
python.useEnvironmentsExtension to False in VSCode settings
- Manually adding missing directories to os.environ['PATH'] in Python after starting the kernel

Behaviour
I'm on Windows. Upon updating to 2026.6.0, I would run Jupyter notebooks in VS code using a conda env as my kernel. After updating, whenever I started the kernel, I could run a few code blocks but within ~1 min (or immediately upon running certain code blocks), the kernel would crash with exit code
0xC06D007Fand no further explanation.Tracing the issue found that upon starting the kernel, os.environ['PATH'] would contain
C:\\Users\\[myusername]\\anaconda3\\envs\\[myenvname]but would be missing entries like the following, which are present when I simply activate the environment in an Anaconda Prompt and enter python:
Manually adding these to the path with the following bandaid code prevented the kernel from crashing.
Setting
python.useEnvironmentsExtensiontoFalsein VSCode settings also appeared to resolve the issue.My hypothesis is that native libraries that rely on the environment's DLLs then fail to load.
The Python extension logs this when the Jupyter extension asks for the activated variables:

Failed to get activated conda env vars(92–115 ms) andUnable to determine site packages path, and launches the kernel anyway with the un-activated environment. Meanwhile the Python Environments extension has already resolved the correct paths in the same session:So the activation command the Python extension builds uses bare
activate/conda activate <name>and appears to ignore the paths the envs extension resolved (and mypython.condaPath). The command only works if Anaconda'scondabinorScriptsis onPATH, which the Anaconda installer does not do by default.Steps to reproduce:
On Windows x64, install Anaconda with the default options (so
condais not on the globalPATH), and create a conda env with numpy/scikit-learn (MKL build) plusipykernel.2. In VS Code 1.140.0, install the Python (2026.6.0), Python Environments (1.38.0) and Jupyter (2025.9.1) extensions. Leave
python.useEnvironmentsExtensionunset.3. Open a folder and a
.ipynb, and select the conda environment's kernel.4. Run a cell that prints the
PATHentries containingconda. Only the environment root is present, with noLibrary\binorScripts:The kernel dies with exit code
