Support for Agent Client Protocol (ACP) #3521

Description

Should Agent Framework provide support for ACP?

https://agentclientprotocol.com/get-started/introduction

It's more specialized than A2A, focusing on "communication between code editors/IDEs and coding agents and is suitable for both local and remote scenarios".

The copilot CLI now exposes support, for example.

    @kasajian

Also useful is the origin story:
    https://zed.dev/blog/acp-progress-report

Zed's acp link, although similar info, I find is also useful.
This is the one from Zed: https://zed.dev/acp

And Gemini CLI is the first, and used as a model:

Hi maintainers, I’d like to follow up on ACP support.

For context, I’m working on sre-agent development at JD.COM Retail. Our project uses MAF as its foundation, and we now have a concrete requirement to add Agent Client Protocol (ACP) support. I’m interested in exploring an upstream contribution.

A possible starting point would be exposing MAF agents to ACP clients over stdio, covering session lifecycle, streaming, cancellation, tool permissions, and client-provided MCP servers. Consuming external ACP agents from MAF could be considered separately.
For persistence and observability, the integration should reuse existing Core/Hosting facilities. It would also need a clear approach to ACP history replay, pending permission state, and runtime coordination. Given the helper-first direction in ADR-0027, I’d appreciate guidance on which responsibilities should belong to the MAF integration, the ACP SDK, or application code.
    Before implementation, could you clarify:

    • Should the initial scope prioritize ACP hosting or consuming external ACP agents?
    • Would a Python-first contribution be acceptable, or should Python and .NET support be developed together?
    • What package and public API shape would you prefer?
    • Would you like an ADR or design proposal first, and which area owners should review it?
I’m interested in exploring a contribution and would like to agree on a focused scope first.
