{Linked:Bug39040012}[Agent Builder Skills] [Web][Testing an agent with a skill in the Preview tab] [ScreenReader]: Copied message is disappearing immediately and users are unable to get that message #5857

Closed

Description

Is it an issue related to Adaptive Cards?

No.

What is the PWD impact?

Users may not know whether the copy action was successful because the confirmation message disappears before it can be read or perceived. Screen reader users, low-vision users, and users with cognitive disabilities may miss the status update, leading to confusion and repeated actions.

What browsers and screen readers do this issue affect?

Windows: Edge with Windows Narrator

Are there any code-based customization done to Web Chat?

No, I am using Web Chat without any customizations except "styleOptions".

What version of Web Chat are you using?

Latest production

Which area does this issue affect?

ARIA roles

What is the public URL for the website?

https://aka.ms/agentbuilder-native-msit

How to reproduce the issue?

  1. Launch the application using the URL: https://aka.ms/agentbuilder-native-msit and login with appropriate credentials. TAB to "Agents ans skills" and press ENTER. Select add add and press ENTER on skip.
  2. Create an agent with a valid skill.
  3. TAB to the "Preview" tab and press ENTER.
  4. Enter a prompt that invokes the added skill and submit it.
  5. Observe the issue

What do you expect?

After the copy action is performed, the confirmation message should remain visible long enough to be perceived and should be announced to assistive technologies through an appropriate status message mechanism

What actually happened?

Copied message is disappearing immediately and users are unable to get that message

Do you have any screenshots or recordings to repro the issue?

Did you find any DOM elements that might have caused the issue?

Hi ahonamatata, thanks for your work on this one and on #5865.

We reconciled this issue against the two recordings attached above and a few local runs. Sharing the findings in case they're useful for the Agent Builder side.

What we observed (Edge 155 + Narrator)

    • Standalone Web Chat (Fluent theme): the copy confirmation is announced. Each press of Copy adds "Copied" to Web Chat's live region, and Narrator reads it.
    • Agent Builder Preview: we watched the UI Automation events Narrator receives. Pressing Copy raised no live-region event from Web Chat at all, with Narrator on or off. The only events were the button-name changes ("Copy" → "Copy Copied" → "Copy", about 0.5 s apart). That matches what is spoken in both recordings.
    • Other announcements in Agent Builder: this seems to apply to Web Chat's other announcements too. Bot replies were announced through a separate role="status" region ("Processing", "Sorting it out…", then the reply), while Web Chat's own live region stayed silent.

Suggestions for Agent Builder, for consideration

    1. It may be worth checking whether the Preview integration hides or replaces Web Chat's live region (.webchat__live-region), for example through display/visibility, aria-hidden, or an announcer that only covers replies.
    2. If that's intentional (e.g. to avoid announcing replies twice), Web Chat's other announcements may need a route to the host announcer: the copy confirmation, send failures, the empty-message error, "new messages", and dictation status.
    3. We're happy to share the small console probe we used. It reports the live region's state and logs what lands in it when Copy is pressed.

On the Web Chat side, we're also looking at making announcements less dependent on the host page (for example ariaNotify where available) and at the visual duration of the confirmation. We'll follow up separately.

    Thanks!

The Web Chat change (#5872: the Copy confirmation is now shown for 5 seconds, so it can be announced) is now available in the nightly build botframework-webchat@4.19.3-main.20261021.71a806e (npm tag main), and will ship in the next release.
