As evidenced by #3523 and pointed out in #3526, the test suite doesn't exercise the ps backend at all. At the very least, I think we should have a smoketest of some sort to ensure that the backend is putting out valid files in the first place.

    According to codecov, the PS backend is 72.14% tested; maybe we can close this?
