Remove deprecated code we threatened to remove for 1.3.x #1966

Anything that we said we should deprecate for 1.3.x should be removed.

[This is, of course, open for discussion if there's a good reason to keep things in for one more cycle, but we should then update the docs etc. to make that clear.]
