I had planned to release a brand new stdlib, with dependencies on new broken out submodules several years ago, which would have obsoleted the current all-in-one release... but then I took a(n otherwise excellent) job which disallowed any open source work or contributions.
However, I recently switched to a more open source friendly employer, so this is all back on my TODO list!
If you have the bandwidth, I'd be interested in whether you can do the things you want using the git rockspecs (see README.md for the various other projects in this github account too) and report any issues to help me apply the final polish necessary to make a solid major release soon.
If not, I have continued to use the last luarocks stdlib release for specl, which in turn runs all the testing for all the rocks I maintain on all supported versions of Lua/luajit, and that works just fine with Lua 5.4:
% lua -v
Lua 5.4.4 Copyright (C) 1994-2022 Lua.org, PUC-Rio
% luarocks install stdlib
Installing https://luarocks.org/stdlib-41.2.2-1.src.rock
stdlib 41.2.2-1 depends on lua >= 5.1, < 5.5 (5.4-1 provided by VM)
stdlib 41.2.2-1 is now installed in /usr/local (license: MIT/X11)

no updates for 5 years, can I still use it? luarocks refuses to install it for 5.4 as it's unsupported
