Fairly frequently, I want to install current git to fix a bug. However, git-1 is less than any numeric version, so this doesn't have the desired effect.
The magic version scm does, so can we have that as well?
The reason I suggest duplicating rather than renaming the rockspec is that equally one often wants to install git to play with, without replacing installed released versions.
I worry that this might lead to things going out of sync at some inopportune moment.
Why not just create a soft-link in the checked out directory to work around this problem? (I realise this means you can't pass a github url to luarocks install, but then that points to a luarocks enhancement rather than more file droppings in lua-stdlib).

A soft-link won't work because the file's declared version must match its name.
