automatic column resize does not work beyond 40 columns #283

This is hard to fix in the current code base without making the editor very slow on large 1D arrays. On the other hand, I will need to fix a similar issue in the "buffer" branch (#33) that I intend to merge before the next major release of the editor, and I hope that related change, will fix this issue for free.
