Some core maintainers (myself included) feel like the following labels have outlived their usefulness. They were originally created in hope we can use these to recruit and retain future maintainers. However, the cost of triaging mostly unacceptable pull requests (nowadays usually AI slops) have outweighed any benefit. These labels are:
good first issue
Package-novice
Package-intermediate (I don't find intermediate very meaningful, you either need expertise or you don't)
Hacktoberfest (we have not participated in many years)
hacktoberfest-accepted (same reasoning as Hacktoberfest)
Proposed actions:
- Remove them from open issues/PRs.
- Retire them in labels list by prepending with a 💤 (as we do with other labels that went through similar fate)
- Remove their mentions from https://www.astropy.org/contribute.html (anywhere else?)
Out of scope:
- I think the keeping
Package-expert label is fine, as we still need to identify which issues need serious domain expertise, even amongst ourselves.
