You're technically right. Yet the concept of "Remote Database" was not invented by Firebase.

Interoperability with different database backends (Google Firebase, some SQLite file, selfhosted Postgres, ... you name it) might be added via a database connector which supports that or an ORM with support for multiple backends (for example PonyORM).

I'm not deep into the code of TreeNote but as far as I see it TreeNote stores all the information into a file. It would be far easier to sync this single file via a standard protocol than using a database connector: something which TreeNote is not build for (~~unless some sort of middleman is used to create this file which also can be used with remote sources~~ _{EDIT: there's no such middleman available. TreeNote uses JSON as structure for storage thus making this ticket very expensive to implement}.).
You're correct that using this method would require retransmitting the same data over and over again. Your proposed solution is more efficient. My proposed solution (#49) is less efficient but "easier" and more transparent to the user (users know about files).
Given that bandwidth is not considered a critical resource in the current discussion about a sync adapter the chosen method (weather this ticket or the other) wouldn't matter.

Let's be realistic here
As far as I know about it this project is no longer developed. It's maintained (bugs will be fixed) but no features added. IIRC the maintainer tries to spin this into a web application.
Even considering that sync might be an addition being able to complete within a single afternoon I guess it's not realistic that the maintainer will invest into adding something that cuts so deep into the identity of this software.

If you're serious about using the computer to manage your to do list then maybe you want to use TaskWarrior, org-mode or todo.txt instead. Personally I use TaskWarrior.

I'm mainly interested in this project because it's a result of a very interesting bachelor work on self-management.
