Music theory spent 500 years developing formal tools for multi-agent creative coordination. We just never called it that.
Every concept in music theory has a direct mapping to agent cognition and collaboration:
| Music | Cognition | Crate |
|---|---|---|
| Voice | Collaborator | agent-jam |
| Chord | Task configuration | agent-jam |
| Chord progression | Sprint phases | agent-jam |
| Harmony | Agreement | agent-jam, ternary-jam |
| Dissonance | Productive conflict | agent-jam |
| Rhythm | Work cadence | ternary-rhythm, agent-rhythm |
| Groove | Flow state | agent-groove |
| Swing | Timing variation | agent-groove |
| Peak performance autonomy | agent-groove | |
| Syncopation | Creative disruption | agent-groove |
| Voice leading | Smooth state transition | agent-voice-leading |
| Counterpoint | Division of labor | counterpoint-engine-rs |
| Improvisation | Creative problem-solving | ternary-jam |
| Resolution | Convergence | agent-voice-leading |
| Leading tone | Agent tendency | agent-voice-leading |
| Cadence | Milestone/completion | agent-voice-leading |
| PLR group | State transformation algebra | flux-algebra |
| Tuning field | Preference/configuration space | flux-algebra |
| Spline smoothing | Change management | spline-midi-smooth |
| Tensor representation | Multi-dimensional state | flux-tensor-midi |
| Polyrhythm | Multi-cadence agents | ternary-polyrhythm, agent-groove |
The key insight: the ternary algebra {-1, 0, +1} is the protocol between every layer. Dissonance/rest/consonance in music = conflict/neutral/agreement in cognition = reject/abstain/approve in agents. Same algebra, different domains.
This pattern map explains WHY the music crates exist alongside the agent crates. They're not separate domains — they're the SAME domain viewed from different angles:
flux-algebradefines the mathematical space →agent-voice-leadingnavigates itternary-jamimplements the jam session →agent-jamgeneralizes itagent-rhythmdetects patterns →agent-grooveoptimizes timingcounterpoint-engine-rsenforces rules →agent-voice-leadingapplies them to transitions
The pollination: music theory → cognitive architecture → agent collaboration → productive output.
