Audit T1.4: Part 2 OpenAPI YAML #20

Open

Description

@Sam-Bolling

Audit: OGC API - Connected Systems Part 2 OpenAPI YAML

Parent Issue: #16 - Phase 6: Pre-Submission Audit
Tier: 1 - OGC Official Specifications (PRIMARY) 🎯
Reference: spec/ogcapi-connectedsystems-2.bundled.oas31.yaml (bundled version in repository)
Priority: CRITICAL
Status: ✅ AUDIT COMPLETE | 📊 ~70-75% Compliance

🔍 Important Notes

YAML File Source: This audit uses the bundled OpenAPI specification provided by the user and stored in the repository. This bundled version includes all schema definitions inline (no external $ref links), making it the complete authoritative source for Part 2.

Key Differences from HTML Spec:

  • The YAML does NOT include the select parameter (property path filtering) that was implemented in Phase 2 based on the HTML spec
  • The YAML uses phenomenonTime and resultTime parameters, which we correctly implemented
  • The YAML includes cascade parameter for DELETE operations (confirmed in Phase 2)
  • The YAML supports special temporal values now and latest (confirmed in Phase 2)

Audit Results Summary:

  • ✅ SATISFIED: 19 path operations (44%), Core CRUD for datastreams/observations/controlstreams
  • ⚠️ PARTIAL: 4 operations (command operations require controlStreamId)
  • ❌ MISSING: 20 operations primarily command status/result endpoints, system event CRUD)
  • 🔵 EXTENSION: 11 parameters (select, spatial filters, datetime)

Critical Gaps Identified:

  • ❌ Missing /commands top-level GET endpoint
  • ❌ Missing all /commands/{id}/status endpoints (6 operations)
  • ❌ Missing all /commands/{id}/result endpoints (6 operations)
  • ❌ Missing several key query parameters
  • ❌ Missing schema PUT endpoints
  • ❌ Missing system event CRUD

Issue Updated: Bundled YAML Reference Added

    What Was Done

Updated this issue to reference the bundled OpenAPI specification now stored at spec/ogcapi-connectedsystems-2.bundled.oas31.yaml in the repository.

    Why This Was Needed

The official OGC YAML specification from the website uses external $ref links to reference schema definitions, making it incomplete for standalone auditing. The bundled version includes all schema definitions inline, providing:

    • ✅ Complete, self-contained specification
    • ✅ All SWE Common schemas embedded
    • ✅ No external dependencies or broken references
    • ✅ Single source of truth for audit validation

This bundled file is the authoritative source for Part 2 compliance auditing.

    Key Updates Made to Issue

    1. Permanent File Reference

    2. Important Context Added

Documented Key Differences Between YAML and HTML Spec:

Feature YAML Status Implementation Status Notes
select parameter ❌ NOT in YAML 🔵 EXTENSION (Phase 2) Implemented from HTML spec Section 7.15
phenomenonTime/resultTime ✅ In YAML ✅ Correctly implemented Temporal filtering parameters
cascade parameter (DELETE) ✅ In YAML ✅ Phase 2 confirmed Delete dependent resources
    Special temporal values (now/latest) ✅ In YAML ✅ Phase 2 confirmed Lines 118-130, 151-163

Resolution: The select parameter is implemented as an extension beyond the YAML spec, justified by its presence in the HTML specification (23-002). This is documented with 🔵 EXTENSION status.

    3. Enhanced Checklist

Added Specific Line Numbers from YAML:

    • /datastreams (line 45)
    • /systems/{systemId}/datastreams (line 1718)
    • /datastreams/{dataStreamId} (line 1855)
    • /datastreams/{dataStreamId}/schema (line 1977) ⭐ Schema endpoint
    • /datastreams/{dataStreamId}/observations (line 2651)
    • /observations (line 2458)
    • /observations/{obsId} (line 2785)
    • /controlstreams (line 2947)
    • /systems/{systemId}/controlstreams (line 3325)
    • /controlstreams/{controlStreamId} (line 3480)

    • /controlstreams/{controlStreamId}/commands (line 4119)
    • /commands (line 3875)
    • /commands/{cmdId} (line 4281)
    • /commands/{cmdId}/status (line 4383) ⭐ Status reports
    • /commands/{cmdId}/status/{statusId} (line 4648)
    • /commands/{cmdId}/result (line 4730) ⭐ Command results
    • /commands/{cmdId}/result/{resultId} (line 4837)
    • /systemEvents (line 4926)
    • /systems/{systemId}/events (line 5325)
    • /systems/{systemId}/events/{eventId} (line 5444)

    • ✅ Observations (2 paths)
    • ✅ Control Streams (5 paths)
    • ✅ Commands (6 paths)
    • ✅ System Events (3 paths)
    • ✅ System History (section added for future validation)

    Added Status Indicators:

    • ✅ SATISFIED - Fully matches YAML spec
    • ⚠️ PARTIAL - Partially implemented or minor discrepancies
    • ❌ MISSING - Required by YAML but not implemented
    • 🔵 EXTENSION - Implemented beyond YAML spec (justified by HTML spec)

    4. Query Parameters Documented with Types

    Example from /datastreams:

    • id - array of string or uri
    • q - array of string (keywords, max 50 chars)
    • phenomenonTime - ISO 8601 instant/period + now/latest
    • resultTime - ISO 8601 instant/period + now/latest
    • system - array of string or uri
    • foi - array of string or uri
    • observedProperty - array of string or uri
    • limit - integer (min: 1, max: 10000, default: 10)

    5. Cross-Reference Section Enhanced

    Added explicit comparison framework:

    • Compare YAML paths with HTML spec sections
    • Document where HTML spec includes features not in YAML
    • Resolution decisions documented (e.g., select as extension)
    • Pass criteria includes handling of extensions

    Audit Readiness

✅ Issue is now ready for proper audit using the bundled YAML as the authoritative source.

    Next Steps:

    1. Systematically verify each path operation against YAML (Section B)
    2. Validate all parameter schemas match YAML types (Section C)
    3. Verify request/response body schemas (Sections D & E)
    4. Check SWE Common schema compatibility (Section F)
    5. Document implementation status with evidence links
    6. Mark extensions with 🔵 EXTENSION and justification

Expected Outcome: High compliance with YAML spec + documented extensions from HTML spec where beneficial.

      • Impact: Enables global command discovery
    2. Implement Command Status Endpoints

      • getCommandStatusUrl(cmdId)
      • createCommandStatusUrl(cmdId)
      • updateCommandStatusUrl(cmdId, statusId)

    Quality Assessment & Honest Evaluation

Following the comprehensive audit posted above, we conducted a critical review of the implementation quality and identified areas where the implementation fell short of the YAML specification requirements.

    Initial Audit Results

    • Overall Compliance: ~70-75%
    • Path Operations: 19/43 satisfied (44%), 4 partial, 20 missing
    • Query Parameters: 26/47 satisfied (55%), 2 partial, 19 missing
    • Response Schemas: 100% compliant
    • Core Data Types: 100% compliant

    Critical Assessment

When confronted with these results, the honest evaluation is: Yes, we missed significant features that should have been implemented according to the YAML specification.

    What Was Missed

    1. Top-level /commands endpoint (YAML line 3875)

      • Critical for global command discovery
      • Should work standalone without requiring controlStreamId
    2. All Command Status/Result Endpoints (12 operations total)

      • Lines 4383-4729: Command status lifecycle (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE)
      • Lines 4730-4925: Command result management (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE)
      • These are NOT optional features; they're core command lifecycle management
    3. 19 Query Parameters Across Resource Types

      • q (keyword search) - Missing from datastreams, control streams
      • system - Missing from datastreams, observations, control streams, commands
      • foi (feature of interest) - Missing from datastreams, control streams, commands
      • observedProperty - Missing from datastreams
      • dataStream - Missing from observations (we have datastreamId instead)
      • sender, controlStream, controlledProperty - Missing from commands
    4. Parameter Naming Inconsistencies

      • Commands: status should be statusCode
      • Observations: datastreamId should be dataStream
    5. Missing Schema Update Operations (2 endpoints)

      • PUT /datastreams/{id}/schema
      • PUT /controlstreams/{id}/schema
    6. Missing System Event CRUD (4 operations)

      • POST, GET (single), PUT, DELETE for system events

    Root Causes

    1. Incremental Development Without Systematic Checklist

      • Built features incrementally based on perceived priorities
      • Did not create complete operation inventory from YAML before coding
      • Assumed some features were optional without verification
    2. Following HTML Patterns Over YAML Specifics

      • Relied heavily on HTML spec examples
      • Didn't systematically cross-check every YAML endpoint
      • Some extensions (like select) came from HTML but aren't in YAML
    3. Assumptions About Feature Scope

      • Treated some query parameters as "nice-to-have" rather than required
      • Focused on happy-path workflows, missed edge cases
      • Didn't account for all resource discovery patterns

    What We Did Right

    • ✅ Core datastream/observation/control stream operations work correctly
    • ✅ Response schemas and data types are 100% compliant
    • ✅ Phase 2 advanced features (cascade, now/latest, select) implemented
    • ✅ Code structure is clean and maintainable
    • ✅ What exists is properly implemented

    Impact Assessment

Current State: The implementation is production-ready for common use cases but NOT fully YAML-compliant.

    • Works for: Basic CRUD on datastreams, observations, control streams; command issuance; system event listing
    • Fails for: Global command discovery, command lifecycle tracking, comprehensive filtering, some standard parameter names
    • Technical Debt: ~30% of specification features not implemented

    Recommendations Going Forward

    Option 1: Accept Current State

    • Ship as-is with documented limitations
    • Add disclaimer: "~70% YAML compliance"
    • List unsupported features clearly

    Option 2: Achieve Full Compliance

    • Priority 1 (HIGH): Implement missing /commands, query parameters, fix naming
    • Priority 2 (MEDIUM): Schema PUTs, event CRUD, observation PUT
    • Priority 3 (LOW): Remaining convenience operations
    • Estimated effort: 2-3 weeks additional development

    Option 3: Hybrid Approach

    • Implement Priority 1 items only (~1 week)
    • Accept technical debt on Priority 2/3
    • Achieve ~85-90% compliance

    Lessons Learned

    1. Always create complete specification checklist BEFORE coding
    2. Audit against bundled spec, not HTML documentation alone
    3. Don't assume features are optional without explicit verification
    4. Cross-check every parameter name against YAML explicitly
    5. Be honest about gaps rather than rationalizing them

    Conclusion

This implementation represents solid foundational work with the core functionality working correctly. However, it does not fully implement the YAML specification. The gaps are well-documented, and we now have a clear roadmap for achieving full compliance if desired.

The 70-75% compliance rate is typical for first-pass implementations but falls short of production-ready standards for a specification-compliant library. Whether to invest in full compliance or ship with documented limitations is a project decision that should be made with full awareness of the trade-offs.

    Audit Status: Complete ✅
    Honest Assessment: Documented ✅
    Path Forward: Awaiting decision 🔵
