Problem
selfManagedAgents lets a frontend talk AG-UI straight to a backend with no CopilotKit runtime, and it is documented at backend/self-managed-agents. No example demonstrates it.
I checked every app under examples/integrations. All of them route through a Node runtime:
- The React examples (
langgraph-python, langgraph-fastapi, agno, pydantic-ai, adk, crewai-crews, crewai-flows, claude-sdk-python, ms-agent-framework-python, strands-python, and the TypeScript ones) each ship src/app/api/copilotkit/[[...slug]]/route.ts.
adk-angular has no Next route, but runs its own server.ts hosting an HttpAgent and points the client at runtimeUrl: "http://localhost:8200/api/copilotkit".
So a reader who wants the runtime-less path has documentation and zero working code.
Why it matters
#2186 collected 30 👍 over fifteen months, and the specific request in it was repeatedly "connect to my FastAPI without standing up Node" (@Greenxq, @joepvdbogaert, @WilliamPeralta, @gabrielefantini). Earlier answers pointed at the "with-repos" examples, and commenters correctly objected that those still contain a Next.js BFF route.
Scope
One runnable example: a Python AG-UI backend (FastAPI ag_ui route) plus a React frontend using selfManagedAgents, with no Node process in the stack.
The README must state the trade-off plainly, since it is not obvious: runtime-side auth, middleware, and routing do not apply on this path, so the endpoint authenticates and authorizes every request itself. It should also note that selfManagedAgents is part of Enterprise Intelligence, that the signal is a client-side console.warn, and that it is not enforced at runtime.
Split out of #2186.
