In conjunction with the recent Fiji with Python Power workshop Q&A, I wanted to poll the community about near-term priorities for Fiji’s Python support. I can’t promise that any of these will be done before end of summer, but knowing about relative enthusiasm will help a lot for steering where I invest my time over the next few months. If you have an opinion, please vote for up to 3!

  • Enhance Appose to use uv for environment building (Benefits: faster env construction inside Fiji; better update messages while building.)
  • Expand features of Fiji’s Python options dialog. (Benefit: more fine-grained management of multiple Python environments, including which packages are installed.)
  • Finish the Ops Python gateway. (Benefit: more concisely invoke Ops routines.)
  • Fix bugs in Fiji Python mode on Windows.
  • Get PyImageJ interactive mode working on macOS in more scenarios.
  • Make Appose work better on all platforms, including documentation and examples.
  • Make Fiji and napari (and/or ndv) work better together in the same process.
  • Merge and release scyjava-stubgen feature enabling more comprehensive type hinting for Java-side API functions (Benefits: better IDE code completions; better static type analysis.)
  • Replace external Maven (mvn) dependency with pure-Python dependency resolver. (Benefit: fewer cryptic mvn-related errors, especially on Windows.)
  • Revamp existing Python-based Fiji plugins to build on Appose as a common base. (Benefit: Fiji’s environment management GUI would then be relevant to all such plugins.)
  • Update PyImageJ docs to cover the new cjdk-powered scyjava.config.set_java_constraints function. (Benefit: no more need to install openjdk nor maven from conda-forge.)
