    Borrowed from French maille (“mesh, loop”), from Vulgar Latin *macla, from Latin macula (“stain”), probably from Proto-Indo-European *smh₁-tleh₂, from *smeh₁- (“smear, rub”). Compare the doublets mancha, mácula, mágoa, mangra, and maquis.
