From Proto-Albanian *lau-, or *launja,[1] from Proto-Indo-European *lewh₃- (“to wash”). Cognate to Latin lavō, Ancient Greek λούω (loúō), with the same meaning.[2] Related to lag.

From older and dialectal lanj, from Proto-Albanian *launja, from Proto-Indo-European *leuh₃- (“release”) (compare English lose, Latin luere (“to release from debt”), Ancient Greek λύω (lúō, “to untie, set free; dissolve”)).
