Usage notes
[edit]- This pronoun has no nominative form.
- Since this pronoun always takes a possessive suffix (and inflects by person), it is lemmatized under the third-person singular and plural form.
- In dialects, inflected forms without any possessive suffixes may be found.
- If this pronoun is an object of a postposition that requires a genitive form, a possessive suffix is not appended to the postposition (because itsensä already has one):
- This pronoun has no plural forms; the singular forms are used also in plural senses, although such contexts remain grammatically in the singular.
- In Old Literary Finnish, lexical reflexive verbs using itsensä were much more numerous; many of these have later been replaced with new verbs containing the reflexive verb suffix -utua (e.g. antaa itsensä → antautua, käyttää itseään → käyttäytyä, näyttää itsensä → näyttäytyä, osoittaa itsensä → osoittautua, pidättää itseään → pidättäytyä, tarita itsensä → tarjoutua, valmistaa itsensä → valmistautua), and occasionally other verbs. The corresponding phrasal verb has usually subsequently fallen out of use, although a small number of them also remain in use today.
