    Via Late Latin from Ancient Greek ἀπόκρυφος (apókruphos, “hidden”), from ἀποκρύπτειν (apokrúptein, “to hide”), from ἀπό- (apó-) +‎ κρύπτειν (krúptein). Related to krypta, krypto-.
