    From Middle High German thrōn, trōn, from Old French tron, from Latin thronus, from Ancient Greek θρόνος (thrónos, “seat, place of honour”).

    This and other words of Greek origin were unaffected by the spelling reform that changed the "th" in e.g. Thier to "t" (Tier).
