[edit]

Etymology
[edit]Internationalism, based on Italian San Marino (“San Marino”), literally “Saint Marinus”, from san (“saint”), a short form of santo (“saint”), + the personal name Marino (“Marinus”). The country is named after Saint Marinus, who according to tradition founded a Christian community on Monte Titano in the fourth century.
The first element is ultimately from Latin sanctus (“holy; saint”). The personal name Marino continues Latin Marīnus (“Marinus”), a nominalisation of marīnus (“of the sea, marine”), from mare (“sea”).
Parallel international forms include Norwegian Nynorsk San Marino, Danish San Marino, Swedish San Marino, German San Marino, Dutch San Marino, Spanish San Marino, Portuguese San Marino, Romanian San Marino and English San Marino.
