Oceania
English
[edit]
Etymology
[edit]From French Océanie, coined circa 1812 by geographer Conrad Malte-Brun, from océan (“ocean”) + -ie, ultimately from Ancient Greek Ὠκεανός (Ōkeanós, “Oceanus”). By surface analysis, ocean + -ia.
Pronunciation
[edit]- (Received Pronunciation) IPA(key): /ˌəʊ.ʃiˈɑː.nɪə/, /ˌəʊ.siˈɑː.nɪə/
- (General American, Canada) IPA(key): /ˌoʊ.ʃiˈæn.i.ə/, /-ˈæn.jə/, (sometimes) /-ˈæn.ə/
- (Australia) IPA(key): /ˌəʉ.ʃiːˈɐː.ni.ə/, /-njə/
- (New Zealand) IPA(key): /ˌɐʉ.ʃiːˈɐː.ni.ə/, /-njə/
- (Ireland, also) IPA(key): /ˌoʊʃiˈænə/ (Can we verify(+) this pronunciation?)
- Hyphenation: O‧ce‧a‧nia
Proper noun
[edit]Oceania
- A continental region composed of the islands of the central and southern Pacific Ocean, principally divided into Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.
- A continent or continental region composed of the members above plus Australia and the Malay Archipelago..
Usage notes
[edit]Despite the fact that Oceania is not widely considered a continent in anglophone countries, some people use the concept in place of the Australian continent when delimiting the continents of the world, mostly because several Oceanian countries that are located in the open Pacific Ocean would otherwise be unable to be included in a continent.
Oceania contains the following countries:
- Australia (sometimes included)
- Brunei (sometimes included)
- East Timor (sometimes included)
- Federated States of Micronesia
- Fiji
- Indonesia (New Guinea; the rest of Indonesia sometimes included)
- Kiribati
- Malaysia (East Malaysia sometimes included)
- Marshall Islands
- Nauru
- New Zealand
- Palau
- Papua New Guinea
- Philippines (sometimes included)
- Samoa
- Solomon Islands
- Tonga
- Tuvalu
- Vanuatu
Territories in Oceania belonging to other countries include:
- Hawaii (United States)
- American Samoa (United States)
- Easter Island (Chile)
- French Polynesia (France)
- Bonin Islands (Japan)
- Guam (United States)
- Wallis and Futuna (France)
- Northern Mariana Islands (United States)
- New Caledonia (France)
