Alabama

  1. A state of the United States. Capital: Montgomery. Largest city: Birmingham.
    • 2014 November 2, “State Legislatures and ALEC”, in Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, season 1, episode 23, John Oliver (actor), via HBO:
That’s right. In fact, a law which passed in Mississippi is so restrictive, it could close the one remaining abortion clinic they have in the entire state, meaning a Mississippi woman, right now, could be saying to herself, “I need to go someplace more progressive like Alabama.”
    • 2015 March 5, Douglas Brinkley, “Selma’s historic bridge deserves a better name”, in CNN‎[2], Atlanta, Ga.: Warner Bros. Discovery, archived from the original on 26 April 2015:
So when King – who had been in Atlanta for “Bloody Sunday” – telegrammed Parks about returning to Alabama to take part in a third mass march from Selma to Montgomery, her immediate answer was “Why, of course.”
  2. A river in Alabama; flowing 318 miles from the confluence of the Tallapoosa and Coosa near Coosada until its confluence with the Tombigbee, forming the Mobile, near Calvert.
  3. A Muskogean language, spoken by the Alabama people.
    Synonym: Alibamu
    • 2024 March 2, Maeve T. Brennan, “‘I Want People to Know It’: Ava E. Silva ’27 Works to Preserve the Alabama Language”, in The Crimson‎[3]:
When Ava E. Silva ’27, a Crimson Arts editor, gave a presentation to the Harvard Undergraduate Linguistics Society about Alabama, an endangered language of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe, she asked her grandmother to record a short video introducing herself in the language. Silva’s grandmother — or áapo, in Alabama — sent back a two-minute long video, but it didn’t exactly follow the script Silva had given her.
  4. A town in New York; named for the state.
  5. Ellipsis of University of Alabama.
    Synonyms: Bama (informal), Tuscaloser (derogatory)
