Glyph origin

[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *ɡʷlaːŋs, *kʰʷaːɡ): semantic 扌 (“hand”) + phonetic 廣 (OC *kʷaːŋʔ) – to stretch or enlarge with hands.

Etymology

[edit]

Compared by Luce (1981) to Burmese ခင်း (hkang:, “to spread, roll out”), though there are phonetic problems, particularly with the final consonants.
