Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Old East Slavic бѣжати (běžati), from Proto-Slavic *běžati, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *bēˀgjā́ˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰégʷ-y-eh₂-ti, from *bʰegʷ- (“to flee, run”). 1-st person singular and 3-rd person plural, as well as imperative forms derive from бечь (bečʹ), from Proto-Slavic *běťi.

    Derived terms

Note: Not all of the following are strictly derived from бежа́ть (bežátʹ). Some are derived from бе́гать (bégatʹ), the multidirectional verb corresponding to бежа́ть (bežátʹ) (a unidirectional verb), and a parallel etymological formation ultimately based on the same root.
