Иоанн

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Russian

[edit]

Etymology 1

[edit]

Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic Іѡаннъ (Iōannŭ), from Ancient Greek Ἰωάννης (Iōánnēs), from Hebrew יוֹחָנָן (Yôḥānān, “God is gracious”). Also used, due to similarity with German Johann, to render Western monarch names equivalent to John (e.g. Иоанн XXIII, that is Pope John XXIII). Compare Иван (Ivan), instead inherited through Old East Slavic.
