Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard

For sensitive matters, you may contact an individual bureaucrat directly by e-mail.
The Bureaucrats' noticeboard is a place where items related to the Bureaucrats can be discussed and coordinated. Any user is welcome to leave a message or join the discussion here. Please start a new section for each topic.
This is not a forum for grievances. It is a specific noticeboard addressing Bureaucrat-related issues. If you want to know more about an action by a particular bureaucrat, you should first raise the matter with them on their talk page. Please stay on topic, remain civil, and remember to assume good faith. Take extraneous comments or threads to relevant talk pages.
If you are here to report that an RFA or an RFB is "overdue" or "expired", please wait at least 12 hours from the scheduled end time before making a post here about it. There are a fair number of active bureaucrats; and an eye is being kept on the time remaining on these discussions. Thank you for your patience.

(I've made this post since previous elections have had their results posted to BN as well). Best, Staraction (talk · contribs) 02:12, 20 May 2026 (UTC)

- Congrats to the new admin electees, and sorry for the ping that I'm about to send Barkeep49 even though he's a scrutineer.@Bureaucrats: Could a crat please action the above? Thanks. – Epicgenius (talk) 03:46, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
Done Congratulations all. -- Avi (talk) 06:33, 20 May 2026 (UTC)- Normally crats know exactly when an RfA will end and so it's easy for one to action the result quickly. With elections we don't know. The results were posted about two hours after voting ended and in the middle of the night for most crats. I am not sure why a ping was needed for anyone at that point. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 12:02, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
- My bad. I apologize for the unnecessary ping, I didn't know if any crats were up and didn't want to assume that the crats were all in one of the Western Hemisphere timezones. – Epicgenius (talk) 13:17, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
- Maybe a crat was up. But it was already posted to the place designed to get our attention. So if it was posted here and some crat who was up didn't see it and it had to wait 3 more hours (as actually happened despite the ping) for some other crat to wake up, there was not some matter of urgency that was harmed by that delay. This was not like a level 1 desysop by ArbCom where I would want some level of urgency for us or some discussion at a place that crats would not normally have visibility into where it is helpful to call our attention. I write this not to further suggest you Epic need to apologize or anything but in the hopes that next time around people can take a deep breath, do the steps that are documented in the Admin Elections procedures, and have trust that it will play out as it should in a very reasonable timeframe. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 14:08, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
- No problem, thanks for the explanation Barkeep. To be honest, I should've heeded my own off-wiki advice that a crat would get to it eventually. Hopefully, if this occurs in the next election, someone won't do what I just did ;) – Epicgenius (talk) 14:17, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
- Fwiw, I don't think an apology is required. We should maybe just appreciate that there being a small delay between passing RfA or Elections and getting the sysop power isn't the end of the world. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 14:17, 20 May 2026 (UTC)

- Congratulations to our new admins, commiserations to those who didn't make it this time. Yes it makes sense to post results to this board. As for pinging us, I think that depends on community expectations. Given that most if not all of us are in a set of timezones that cover the third of the planet between London and Los Angeles, it could be several hours before a crat comes to this board, especially announcements like this that come in the witching hour after crats on the West Coast have imbibed their evening cocoa and before those of us in windswept parts of North West Europe have had our flunkies bring us our morning tea and toast with a crisply ironed copy of the signpost. So if people are tetchy with it sometimes taking several hours to rustle up a bureaucrat, my suggestion is that you encourage one of our Indian, East African or Australasian admins to go for Bureaucrat. But yes a ping would be in order if this board goes 12 hours without a crat dealing with a crat matter posted here. ϢereSpielChequers 08:39, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- 12 hours, yes, not 2
I agree that posting the results this late is... problematic, for all of the reasons posted above (I was certainly asleep). I suggest in the future the AELECT coordinators should maybe not post after midnight. Primefac (talk) 10:37, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- Well, we couldn't exactly post them before midnight, could we? :p Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 10:45, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- Technically all times are after midnight, which has always ruined that series for me. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 11:27, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- All times are after midnight, you say? Crap. Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 11:41, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- There was 1 crat around when the results were posted. It just happened to be me and I declined multiple invitations to implement it since I was a scrutineer and I decided it was just fine for me to leave it to someone else even if that wasn't a formal rule. But that said delaying the results to be more convenient for the crats schedules strikes me as a bit much. We don't limit what times RfAs can start to only times that crats are around. Volunteers should do the work at a time that is reasonable for them and in keeping with the roles they have volunteered for. So for elections, scrutineers should do the work quickly but on a timeline that makes sense for them, once that work is done the clerks should do the work quickly but on a timeline that makes sense for them, and once that work is done we the crats should do the work quickly but on a timeline that makes sense for us. For the scrutineers "quickly" could be several days; for the clerks and for us even 12 hours strikes me as with-in the realm of quick. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 15:05, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- Given that there is a mandatory 24-hour wait for even an uncontroversial resysop request, I don't think an interval shorter than that between election results and promotion can be seen as unreasonably long. Thryduulf (talk) 16:31, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- Would it help manage expectations if the election results pages routinely included "The bureaucrats are being notified and will usually hand out the mops in a day"? Or some such. NebY (talk) 16:34, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- Is that really necessary? I get some users may want the mop immediately, but we really aren't talking about a long period of time here, and it's very possible it would be done quickly on some occasions. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 21:53, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- In terms of elected editors, it really only impacts those who want it immediately and who are awake and online when the results are posted and that is at a time when no unrecused crats are awake and online. That's got to be a single digit number of people per election at most. The notice would most likely relevant to (over)enthusiastic voters who supported one or more successful candidates. Accordingly I think a single short sentence in the election timeline that the crats will not necessarily flip the bits instantly would be the most useful. Thryduulf (talk) 00:01, 22 May 2026 (UTC)

I would like to reäctivate my adminship. I resigned in November to focus on setting up the Toki Pona Wikipedia, and then was kept away by the incomprehensible emotional medley of, in the span of a few weeks, finding true love and losing a parent. After a few months of learning to live in a world that is different in two very significant regards from the one I previously knew, I find myself again with the necessary cognitive and emotional capacity to serve as an administrator. Thank you as always to the bureaucrat team. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 16:07, 22 May 2026 (UTC)
- Standard 24 hour hold, but I see no issues with restoring sysop. Barkeep49 (talk) 16:08, 22 May 2026 (UTC)
