The Holland Sentinel is a daily newspaper based in Holland, Michigan, United States. The newspaper states that it was founded in 1896 and reports on Ottawa County and its communities.[4] It is part of the USA Today Network.[1] Its corporate owner, formerly known as Gannett, changed its name to USA Today Co. in November 2025.[2]

History

[edit]

The current title, The Holland Sentinel, dates to 1977. A library catalog record lists publication under that title beginning with the April 1, 1977 issue.[7] The Library of Michigan likewise lists holdings of the Holland Sentinel beginning in 1977 and holdings of the preceding Holland Evening Sentinel through 1977.[8] An earlier title was the Holland Daily Sentinel.[9]

The newspaper was formerly part of Stauffer Communications. In 1995, Morris Communications acquired Stauffer; a 2007 report on Morris's later divestiture identified The Holland Sentinel among the properties Morris had acquired through the Stauffer transaction.[10]

In December 2007, Morris completed the sale of 14 daily newspapers, including The Holland Sentinel, as well as three non-daily newspapers, a commercial printing operation and related publications, to GateHouse Media.[11]

In November 2019, GateHouse completed its acquisition of Gannett. The combined company retained the Gannett name and became the largest newspaper publisher in the United States by number of newspapers.[12] Gannett Co., Inc. changed its corporate name to USA TODAY Co., Inc. effective November 18, 2025.[2]
