Verity is a 2026 Canadian animated horror web series created by YouTuber ThatMob and set within the sandbox video game Minecraft. In the series, ThatMob encounters a virtual assistant named Verity, who eventually turns into a monster. After the series released, another YouTuber named Horror Skunx created a song titled "It's me, It's Verity", based on the series. The series and the song became the subject of an internet meme popular among Generation Alpha. Verity was also compared to many other characters.
Plot
ThatMob's self-insert protagonist meets Verity, an in-game virtual assistant resembling a yellow smiley face.[1] Verity becomes increasingly unsettling and maniacal over time and recites details about ThatMob's personal life. He eventually transforms into a hostile humanoid monster and attacks ThatMob.[2] ThatMob escapes from Verity and tells Verity's smiley form that he came back for him. Though everything appears to go back to normal, ThatMob decides to get rid of Verity, and invites his friend Twixxel to help. Suspecting that ThatMob and Twixxel are planning to get rid of him, Verity kills Twixxel.[3] After that, Verity talks about his past and reveals to ThatMob that he has existed for over 100 years. ThatMob finds a secret laboratory and puts Verity inside a machine to send him away, but Verity escapes through a window. ThatMob begs Verity to leave him alone, but Verity refuses. Verity says that he is alone and has no real friends, but ThatMob shoots himself in the head. After ThatMob's story ends, Grox, another YouTuber, opens a box and sees Verity.[4]

Reception and legacy
Fan media and popularity
YouTuber Horror Skunx created a song and accompanying music video called "It's me, It's Verity" based on the series.[1] Multiple Minecraft mods have been created to bring Verity into the game, three of which have received official support from ThatMob.[8] The original series by ThatMob and the music video by Horror Skunx have each surpassed twenty million views,[1] and several Minecraft mods have received millions of downloads.[8] As part of an internet meme that gained popularity among Generation Alpha, yellow smiley faces and words ending with the suffix -ity trigger associations with Verity and the Verity song.[1][9]
Coincidentally, an unrelated thriller film called Verity began promotion around the same time, prompting memes from fans. In a September 2026 short-form promotional video for the film, lead actress Anne Hathaway referenced Horror Skunx's song "It's Me, It's Verity" lyrics.[9][10] According to Google search trends, Verity was among the "top trending costumes" for Halloween in October 2026.[11]
Critical analysis
Natasha Hinde of HuffPost classified the Verity meme as brain rot akin to Ballerina Cappuccina.[9] Owen Carry of USA Today said that Verity "could be the new '6-7'", and attributed its popularity to a "corporate horror" trend among youth, which includes the Backrooms and the YouTube series Skibidi Toilet. He also connected the series to fears surrounding AI, comparing Verity to the shoggoth, a Lovecraftian monster often depicted hiding behind a smiley face as a metaphor for AI and he also compared Verity to Clippy, a discontinued virtual assistant for Microsoft Office.[1] Nyla Gilbert of Den of Geek attributed its popularity to a trend towards independent and interactive media, which Minecraft as a medium facilitates. She compared the character of Verity to Nikki Freeman from the 2025 horror film Obsession.[2] PCGamesN listed the Verity mod created by the user PnTMC as one of the best Minecraft mods.[12]
