Adds payment method type information for failed payments

What’s new

Adds support for the payment_method_type property on the last_payment_error hash on the PaymentIntent object. This property now returns the payment method type used in a failed payment attempt—for example, card, iDEAL, or SEPA Direct Debit—including for failures that occur during capture and multicapture attempts. The same information is included in the payment_intent.payment_failed event.

Impact

You can now determine which payment method type was involved in a failed payment directly from the last_payment_error property, without needing to expand the payment method or join it against separate data sources. This applies to new payment failures going forward; existing records aren’t backfilled.

Upgrade

  1. View your current API version in Workbench.
  2. If you use an SDK, upgrade to the corresponding SDK version for this API version.
    • If you don’t use an SDK, update your API requests to include Stripe-Version: 2026-09-30.endive
  3. Upgrade the API version used for webhook endpoints.
  4. Test your integration against the new version.
  5. If you use Connect, test your Connect integration.
