4/17/2020 23:29:20Cam PerryYesYescamperryHow to Lead a TeamfreeCodeCamp OKC
As a self taught developer who eventually joined a bootcamp, I was surprised how the essential lessons were not only on code, but working on code together with other people. From having people around me to getting to lead small teams working together, the impact we can have makes a significant difference.

In this talk, we walk through my lessons from self-taught to a Lambda school student to a team lead, to help you avoid the pitfalls I experienced. We’ll look at how one of the most underrated skills is having experience working in a team environment, and how the experiences of repeated situations helps us navigate through difficult situations. Avoid lack of communication, not having a clear leader and not planning effectively as good teams have pretty much done all those things very well.

You are probably wondering, Cam how can I accomplish these things. First, play some sort of icebreaker to get to know each other and find out why they got into the industry. Second, find out what everyone’s strengths and weaknesses are and have defined roles in mind. Third and this is probably as important as the others is planning planning planning. If you don’t plan you plan to fail. Let’s plan to lead effectively and work well together.

Beyond the JVM: Using Native Code in Java Apps

Java is popular for its portability and ease-of-use, gaining ground early in its life with its slogan "write once, run anywhere". The Java Virtual Machine abstracts hardware so anyone can comfortably target any machine, but it comes with a tradeoff: losing control of the real machine. "Native" apps can control hardware, directly access the GPU and other modules, and be highly optimized into fast, efficient compiled code; these features are missing in basic Java. How can we bring those capabilities in?

Join us as we explore Java's escape hatch to the native world, the Java Native Interface. In this talk we explore the techniques and pitfalls of building Java code on top of native libraries, including:
- Managing ABIs and APIs through a Foreign Function Interface
- Memory ownership and manual vs. garbage-collected management
- Building on the Java Native Access framework to simplify the JNI
- Error management across FFI boundaries
- Composing build systems into one
- Demo: exposing ripgrep's native Rust API as a Java library

Even bad code can function. But if code isn't clean, it can bring a development organization to its knees. Every year, countless hours and significant resources are lost because of poorly written code. But it doesn't have to be that way.

Based on the book "Clean Code : A Handbook of Agile Software Craftsmanship" by Robert C. Martin, this presentation will examine best practices for cleaning code "on the fly". You will be challenged to think about what's right and what's wrong with code, and how to transform a code base that has problems into one that is sound and efficient.

We will explore specific techniques for improving code bases and managing complexity in order to maximize the benefits of agile development and long-term project stability and maintainability.

What does it take to get your company's support for UX? A lengthened timeline and the tough conversations involved in the Design process can be a hard sell for companies in the habit of going to market fast. Years of building and releasing someone's best guess of what users want means challenging the status quo of profit over experience.
We already know a key ingredient is time: time educating, illustrating, convincing, and circling back to do it all again. So why not learn from experience and avoid wasting time? How can you focus on strategies and tactics the bring the most bang for that time?
This month, we'll interview Brandi Moore, Senior Usability Analyst at American Fidelity, on just this topic. She's been leading the charge for user-centered thinking in her company for over a decade. Brandi ready to share her best tricks for getting buy-in to try new things, which strategies to use first, and how to present what you learn. Intro to Design Patterns in TypeScript

I am the Director of Product and Technology at SendaRide, a concierge ride-share platform helping patients find transportation to their medical appointments. I am a self-taught software developer by trade, specializing in JavaScript. I've used TypeScript with several libraries including API frameworks like Loopback 4, which heavily incorporates proven design principles using the tools of TypeScript.
OKC.js7/16/2019 11:30:00
JavaScript has allowed many to jump into the world of programming and utilize their expertise at multiple layers of the stack, reducing the amount of time to produce useful code toward an application.

But what happens when you need to scale that code or maintain already scaled code? The first tools for a scalable code base toolbox are proven design principles and patterns that simplify our code and make it much easier to jump into, for a new developer.

This is why some libraries such as Angular and Loopback have changed entirely to TypeScript. This presentation gives brief introduction to TypeScript, how to set it up in a project, and it's basic features, as well as demonstrating how these features can help you make your codebase easier to maintain and scale.

Apache Kafka has boomed in recent times and is continuing to gain popularity. As organizations move forward with microservice architecture, they face a new challenge - communication among microservices. Many argue Kafka is the most elegant solution. And what about Enterprise Data Integration? It's an enormous challenge for companies. While there are many solutions, this is also solved by Kafka's impeccable data steaming pipeline capabilities.

Join us as we dive into the world of Kafka. In this talk, you can expect to gain skills like:
-Using Apache Kafka in a microservice architecture
-Building event sourcing and CQRS design patterns
-Utilizing the Spring framework to build a communication channel among microservices
-Creating a real-time data streaming pipeline
All while leveraging the Kafka Producer API, Consumer API, Kafka Connect API, Kafka Stream API, Schema Registry, and KSQL. We'll see this all come together in a demo data streaming pipeline that feeds into elasticsearch.

Get ready for another deep dive on a topic-- We'll be talking about designing accessibility for the web - from a developer's perspective! Despite what we envision, not every user is 100% flawless as far as mental and physical capabilities go - and there's no excuse for ignoring that. Building an accessible product almost always leads to a much more well-architected product - so it's a win-win.

In this talk, we'll discuss the tools and strategies you can use to aid users with visual, auditory, cognitive, and motor impairments. We'll discuss contrast, colors, content, keyboard flows, screen readers, section 508 - as well as some development concepts such as skip menus, the accessibility tree, hover and focus indicators, ARIA properties, and more.

There's a lot that developers and designers can do to aid users with impairments - so let's do it!

OKC FP4/30/2019 11:30:00
Category theory is the language of structure and composition. It is the language of composable and coherent systems. It has been applied to neural networks and chemical networks, classical mechanics and quantum. It is pervasive in functional programming. If you've ever used a functor or a monad or a parametric type, you have used category theory. Recently, it's been applied to database design as well. This talk will be an introduction to category theory through Haskell and database programming. We will look at how similarities between the two can be expressed in categories, and how the benefits of safety and abstraction that functional programmers enjoy can be had by database users, too.

Reactive Programming Applying Duality: The Lost Art of Denotational Semantics
https://www.meetup.com/okcjug/events/260243783/

He holds a PhD in Mathematics from Northwestern University, and works at PCI as a Senior Principal Developer. He's got a passion for system architecture and super-clean well-structured code.
OKC JUG4/9/2019 11:30:00
The phrase Denotational Semantics is an academic term for mapping programs to mathematical objects as a way to define their meanings. This phrase is not well-known in industry but we use it here to make it clear that this presentation is a shamelss rip off of a talk by Erik Meijer of a similar title. Erik Meijer, the founder of Applied Duality, is often cited as the inventor of 'reactive', a group of frameworks which have shown up in almost every programming language. The universal applicability of Meijer's initial reactive framework is attributed by Meijer to long-established mathematical principles such as currying, duality, and coproducts. With these few simple constructions we can understand a wide variety of interfaces in a deeper way. As a practical example, we will cover Meijer's derivation of Observable/Observer interfaces as duals of Iterable/Iterator interfaces. The takeaway is that every developer can apply denotational semantics to better design and implement common programs.

You’ve heard people don’t read online. And while that’s true, it’s an incomplete thought. Unless you run an online publication of some kind, your users aren’t reading your site or app like they would an essay or book. Instead, they’re trying to use those words to do something. As quickly and easily as possible.

Why, then, do our sites and apps continually contain walls of text that stretch from here to the moon? Why do we force users to toil through mounds of unnecessary, gratuitous, irrelevant words online?

Because we still think about words as something you read. Online, words are something you do.

We need to revolutionize the way we think about web content. We need the right words in the right place doing the right job. It’s not easy to do, but we’ll walk through getting started together.

Let's face it, the information architecture of your website or app isn't always top priority during design. But it doesn't have to be hard and you can get some actionable insights with just a little bit of effort. Begin testing your website today with a tree test, here is how to start.

The Importance of Side Projects and Why You Need One

Side projects are an important aspect of your own personal career development. This is especially true when you are new and still learning. A good side project can provide motivation for you to keep learning and keep pushing further in ways that textbooks and other basic examples for you to follow cannot. I will share my own story of how I got into programming at a young age, the side projects that kept me motivated, the mistakes I made, and the things I learned along the way.

The Four Stages of DevOps Within an Organization

Dodzidenu Dzakuma is a DevOps Engineer / Full-Stack Developer who has worked in a number of different companies doing development supporting production factories, working with telecommunications vendors, and helping intelligent farming methods.

DevopsOKC2/15/2019 11:30:00
DevOps is an extremely trendy word in tech right now. A lot of organizations are adopting or trying to adopt DevOps to help their organization succeed in today's fast paced market.

If you've been in the trenches as a Full-Stack developer or DevOps engineer you understand the importance of separating features of an application, creating internal company APIs, and communicating across silos. But what if you're in the operation side of this transformation? You'll have lots of questions about DevOps and what it can do for your company.

Dodzi Dzakuma, will be giving an overview of the different stages of DevOps transformation in a company, signs that you can use to see what stage your organization is in, a strategic view of a DevOps transformation and its value proposition, key places operations should be focusing on, and the goal that every company should set as a measure for finding success in this hard and trying paradigm shift.

Microsoft has open sourced a huge amount of .NET-related code. We'll take a quick look at (parts of) what's out there, and then focus on the processes and tools Microsoft (and community!) devs use to manage development.

We'll also take a quick diversion into describing the relationship between C#, Visual Basic, and .NET, for those coming from other ecosystems.
