None of the new comedy series introduced by Fox this season will make it to second season. The network has moved in to cancel freshmen Grandfathered, starring John Stamos, and The Grinder, starring Rob Lowe. They are joined by midseason entries Cooper Barrett’s Guide To Surviving Live and the animated Bordertown, which also are not continuing.
While Bordertown and Cooper Barrett had been written off awhile ago, with Fox downgrading them to lower-trafficked time
slots, earlier in the spring, it looked like Fox may renew one of its freshman starring vehicles, Grandfathered, which was a little stronger in the ratings, or The Grinder, which had some of the strongest reviews for a new series this season. For awhile, it looked like a horse race, with The Grinder, fully owned by Fox, and Grandfathered, a co-production with ABC Studios, alternating in taking the lead. But, after evaluating the two shows’ performance and hearing the producers’ ideas for Season 2 while also viewing its pilots for next season, the network brass started leaning toward pulling the plug on both shows in the last few weeks. There were some hopeful signs for Grandfathered in the last couple of days, with talk about tweaking the show,.which is executive produced by top 20th TV-based creator Dan Fogelman, but the network ultimately canceled both shows.
The Grinder, starring Lowe as the former star of a legal show who joins his father and brother’s small-town law firm and co-starring Fred Savage, most recently drew 1.5 million viewers and a 0.5 adults 18-49 rating in Live+same day last week. In Grandfathered, Stamos was a successful bachelor who discovered he was actually a father and a grandfather. Josh Peck co-starred.
Not sure why I was so late in discovering that the best two shows in a very long time were cancelled (Grandfathered and Grinder) except that I didn’t expect it a possibility based on originality and quality, not to mention star power. Who would throw all that away? Oh. Yeah. Fox.
Is it just me or have the networks forgotten the algorithm for coming up with ratings numbers has completely been reworked (or needs to be) since it can no longer compete with cable programming or the hulus and netflixes? Networks television is and has been the uncool kids lunch table for a very long time now. The numbers obviously reflect this and I’m certain if viewed based on that John Stamos, Rob Lowe and Fred Savage were all seated at the cool kids’ table!
So Fox heads, if you’re going to keep your heads up your old algorithms re ratings and play along other tv sellouts by purchasing the cheapest-made shows, ie; reality programming and game shows… I don’t know. I just don’t know. I had hopes of sticking to free television longer than this!?
Thanks for getting my hopes up with Grandfathered and the Grinder. I don’t remember being THIS let down! I’m cool with sitting at the uncool table but, Fox, you’re no longer invited.
*I knew I forgot one of the biggest hole-fillers in the cheaply-made television category: Animation. I gotta go… getting dizzy shaking my head this way.
Ohhh Nooo … Please, not “Grandfathered”. We have been enjoying that show. It’s so funny and it still tells a story. I really hope Netflix or someone will pick it up! So sad to hear it’s been cancelled !!
The only Fox comedies that will be in the 2016-2017 season is The Simpsons, New Girl, Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and The Last Man on Earth. The other ones should not be canceled
I really liked grandfathered. Thought it would get picked up for season two for sure. really hope Hulu or Netflix picks it up
Such a mistake…grandfathered and the grinder were hilarious and great shows..hope they get picked up again
