The November issue of FERAL goes to print soon, and it still needs a cover. The editor’s only note - it needs attitude. This month, you’re the art director.Welcome to the InDesign Creative Challenges - a brand-new monthly series and a companion to the Illustrator challenges many of you already know. We’re starting on InDesign’s home turf - magazine cover design, where layout, type, and imagery all have to work together on a single, striking page. THE CHALLENGE: DESIGN THE NEXT COVER FOR FERALThe magazine FERAL is a monthly wildlife magazine with bite: bold photography, big personalities, and the stories behind nature’s best and worst behavior. Read by wildlife lovers, photographers, and design-minded readers who want their nature with a bit of attitude.Your cover star: Any wildlife you like: a big cat, a bird, a reptile, a bug, a fish. Pick a shot with presence, ideally looking down the lens, with clear space for your masthead and cover lines.WHAT TO INCLUDEMasthead - set big and conf

How to Save an InDesign File for Older Versions (IDML) Did you know? InDesign files aren't backward compatible by default - a .indd file saved in InDesign 2024 simply won't open in InDesign CC 2019. But there's a simple workaround: export as IDML. What is IDML?IDML (InDesign Markup Language) is an open, XML-based file format that acts as a universal bridge between InDesign versions. Any version of InDesign from CS4 onwards can open an IDML file - making it the go-to format when collaborating with colleagues or clients on older software.But backward compatibility is only half the story. IDML is also one of the most reliable ways to recover a corrupted InDesign file. Because IDML is XML-based rather than binary, exporting a damaged .indd to IDML and then reopening it often strips out the corruption that's causing crashes, freezes, or "cannot be opened" errors - even when other recovery methods fail. Many InDesign users keep this trick in their back pocket specifically for emergencies, no
Hi,I have tried to google the matter but cannot find the answer anywhere. I simply want to view my pages touching each other top against bottom so they form one continuous row. Is this possible somehow.I have gone to preferences-guides and pasteboards and set the vertical margin to 0, but the marked spacing is still there.Please see attached screenshot with spacing I want to remove marked in a red rectangle.
After copying the same image and rotating it by 10 degrees, the "W" value on the control bar does not change, and the rotated W is not obtained using gb [3] - gb [1].I found a script that should be correct in principle, but it will mention 'undified':var d = app.activeDocument;var item = app.selection[0];//No rotation, obtain directly from the boundaryvar gb = item.geometricBounds;var width = gb[3] - gb[1];// If the object has rotation, use transformValues to obtain the actual sizevar tv = item.transformValuesOf(CoordinateSpaces.INNER_COORDINATES);var w = tv.horizontalScale;var h = tv.verticalScale;alert(w);
Form InDesign 21.6 when I import/insert file AI, don’t work and preview double image. Don’t work from 1 years ago, don’t resolve when I update new versione
I have asked this before but am trying again. There is no scroll bar in the list of activated fonts in Creative Cloud. This makes it impossible to deactivate the fonts I no longer need. Interestingly enough, when I made a screen shot of the window and placed it here, there WAS an active scroll bar in the screen shot — again, only once it was placed. It does not appear when I am in Creative Cloud. I took a screen shot of the screen shot that showed the lack of a scroll bar; I could not place both of them in this box.
Even though I don’t want to use it all, I have activated the entire Adobe Garamond Pro family as that seems to be the only way to be sure of accessing the fonts I do want to use. When I go to the character menu, a limited number of them are available. Yet the paragraph and character styles include the correct fonts. It’s only when I select a few words whose font I want to change that this is a problem. The work around is to impose a paragraph style and then change the font, but that seems absurd.
How can I view pages (in a book) in the side by side view, but give them a gap between them so that I can manage the bleed in the middle? I’m using a lot of large images and in the side by side view, the bleeds go into the page beside it. I remember this being an issue 25 years ago when I was working on the high school yearbook, and I still don’t see an answer when I search for it...
When i open InDesign the app crashes. I’m unable to even open the app. I have re-installed the app, which didn’t solve the issue. I also tried installing other update versions, which also didn’t solve the issue. All my other Creative Cloud apps are up to date. What to do now?
Hi there, I've searched the community and the web for this glitch and can't find it. unfortunately the latest updated to both software and OS haven't fixed this.Basically, if I leave my design for a little bit, and then come back to it (say after a meeting)I find that as soon as I tap the page with my cursor – the entire layout (all pages) disappear. Everything else is still present including my pages column on the right. But the only thing that seems to bring it back is saving and restarting the programme which obvs isn't convenient.Anyone else experienced this and/or has a fix?Many thanksCarolyh
Currently having an issue with my undo/history function. I seem to only be able to go back 2 or 3 commands before the entire history disappears. pls help!
HiEach time I import an image into Indesign, the image loads okay, but I get the blue swirling ‘loading’ icon that never stops. I can save my document, and the menus still work but I can’t work on the actual page, and the only way I can clear it it to Force quit Indesign using Task Manager. This started about 2 weeks ago, and was fine before and I haven’t made any changes to my PC. I thought maybe it started after an update of Indesign, so I tried reverting to an older version, but still had the same problem.I have tried re-installing Indesign. (version21.3) I use Windows 11.I really hope you can help please?Thanks Chris
The lines that appear in this Publish Online version are not in the original placed images. They appear on multiple pages throughout the document (pp. 2,4,6,7 etc) I thought maybe it has to do with the transparency of the background image, but it’s inconsistent. For example, pp. 34 and 35 have placed background images that were created and formatted the same way, (both with 62% opacity) but the lines only show up on p. 34. The transparency blend space for the document is set to RGB. And the placed images in question are RGB.FYI, using Indesign version 21.5.1on MacOSAny insights would be greatly appreciated.
I have a 310 page InDesign document. When I export it to pdf it started off at 3.03 GB. I need it to be smaller. So I started by reducing the png resolution and photo size. That made the file bigger. Then I changed a bunch of the pngs to jpegs and that also made the file larger even though both of those actions made the photo sizes exponentially smaller. What am I doing wrong? Thanks
I am using InDesign 21.3, working on a simple 2 page file, I go to place a logo and the blue thinking wheel pops up and doesn’t go away. I can click and move things around but none of it is being “saved”. I close the file and click to close the program and it just sits there still open. I then have to force quit the program. When I relaunch the file opens with the software and everything I did while the wheel was spinning was not saved.It’s done this several times since the update and there is no pattern to why. I’m finding it randomly acting up. It’s really frustrating, especially when I’m not working on anything complicated.

Hello everyone.I have three versions of Photoshop, and sometimes I need to use one version to work better.I have always wanted to open the image from the ID using the specified PS version.Does anyone have a solution?Or can we never avoid the constraints of new BridgeTalk()?var item=app.selection[0];var paths=item.itemLink.filePath;openPathsInPhotoshop(paths);unction openPathsInPhotoshop(paths) { const DELIMITER = '###'; var photoshop = BridgeTalk.getSpecifier("photoshop"); if (!photoshop) return alert("BridgeTalk couldn\'t find Photoshop."); // send script via BridgeTalk var bt = new BridgeTalk(); bt.target = photoshop; // our variables bt.body = '(#FN#)("#P#","#D#");' .replace('#D#', DELIMITER) .replace('#P#', paths.join(DELIMITER)) .replace('#FN#', openPaths);};
After trying the free trial of AI Translator Pro by Oussama Touzni, I decided to purchase a monthly subscription.However, when I try to manage the plugin through Adobe Exchange in Creative Cloud, the plugin does not appear.I’m working on a Mac and have installed all the latest updates. I’ve restarted the applications several times and have also tried signing out and back in, but unfortunately, nothing has worked.Can anyone help me resolve this issue?Thanks in advance!
Hello everyone,I'm experiencing a serious hyphenation issue in Adobe InDesign while working on a 100-page editorial publication written entirely in British English.The problemDespite having the text and paragraph styles correctly set to English (UK), InDesign continues to produce word breaks that follow American English hyphenation conventions rather than British English ones.For example: “democ-racy” instead of the British English “demo-cracy”. “lab-oratories”, which also appears to follow American rather than British hyphenation patterns. What I've already tried Verified that the language assigned to the text is English (UK). Checked the language settings within the paragraph styles. Changed the dictionary and hyphenation settings. Switched between the Hunspell and Proximity hyphenation engines. Unfortunately, neither engine has resolved the problem. Switching to Proximity corrected some word breaks, but others, such as “democ-racy”, remained unchanged.Why this is a serious i
Hello,I am creating an interactive fillable PDF form and need to use a custom checkbox.I am aware as to how I add my 'Icon' to the Sample Buttons and Form Box, but am having difficulty when attempting to alter the appearance states 'Normal' or 'Rollover' or 'Click'.It seems that when I turn my button into a checkbox, as soon as it becomes selected, it puts a god awful default tick inside it as opposed to allowing me to choose my own 'Normal' state.Please help.M/
The post a few days ago was messy and lost.As shown in the picture, this is the source of constant and unchanging statements.How to read it?Previously, various statements obtained through geometricBounds conversion were not reliable.Every image, even those made with Photoshop, has this value.Hi @m1b ,Would you be willing to help me take a look? I remember in the code that generates static captions, you can read 'XMP File Info'.
Hi everyone,I'm migrating/building an existing InDesign plug-in using the InDesign SDK 21.2 on macOS.While compiling the project, I'm encountering the following error:MacFileSystemIterator.cpp:139:35No member named 'IDFileToFSRef' in 'FileUtils'Existing code:void MacFileSystemIterator::SetStartingPath( const IDFile& fileSpec){ FileUtils::IDFileToFSRef(fileSpec, fStartingFileRef);} It appears that IDFileToFSRef() is not available in the FileUtils class in SDK 21.2.My questions: Has IDFileToFSRef() been deprecated or removed in the newer InDesign SDK? Is there an alternative API to convert IDFile into FSRef? If this API has been removed, what is the recommended approach for updating MacFileSystemIterator.cpp to work with SDK 21.2? Is there an updated implementation of MacFileSystemIterator available? Development environment Component Version macOS Tahoe 26 Adobe InDesign 2026 – v21.2 InDesign SDK 21.2 Xcode
