What is GraphQL?

GraphQL is a query language for API and server runtime for addressing these queries. It is mainly used to only request the data you need, thus improving response time and reducing network bandwidth usage, therefore limiting the number of requests you need.

GraphQL was created in 2012 by Facebook and was open-sourced in 2015. It solves an important problem of getting only needed data from one place rather than making requests to multiple microservices and getting tons of unwanted data in response. It is very useful for network and performance-constrained environments like mobile devices.

In this article, we’ll learn the basic terminology and create a sample application using Java, Spring Boot, and GraphQL. The GitHub link will be shared at the end of the article.

GraphQL Terminologies

GraphQL has a client-server architecture for data exchange. The client sends queries to the server for performing various actions like fetching data or creating/updating/deleting data.
