The parent/child relationship can be messy – and Hindsight beautifully captures that complex intimacy. Join Mary on a trip down memory lane as she packs up her childhood home after her mother’s death. Swipe to look around each scene and tap an object – maybe a vinyl record she often listened to with her dad or a chef’s knife that reminds her how she put work before her mum – to move on to the next moment. Have some tissues handy!
What we love: The heartfelt, insightful story. As Mary thinks back on her time with her mother, she remembers the good things – like sunny days at the beach – but also the weight of parental expectations that drove a wedge between them. It’s sometimes sad, often relatable and ultimately uplifting.
Quick tip: Having trouble finding the next interactive element? Rotate the camera to look in the direction the primary character is facing – that’s usually where you’ll spot it. And remember that some objects (like doors or piano keys) require swipes or multiple taps to activate.
Meet the creator: Hindsight comes from Joel McDonald – maker of the tranquil tree-cultivating game Prune – and writer Emma Kidwell. While crafting the game’s narrator, Kidwell drew on her own experiences as a Japanese American of having one foot in each culture while not feeling fully a part of either.
