I first got Shapr3D years ago because it seemed to be the only capable CAD app on iPad. I really enjoyed the simplicity, and though it definitely had limitations compared to other tools out there, it worked great for prototyping, concepting and creating drawings.Then… they introduced parametric modeling… and that was rough. Gone was the simplicity I was used to. This change was drastic enough that it rendered the app almost unusable to me, and I didn’t have the time (or want to make the time) to relearn a new way of modeling.Then… I decided to learn what this parametric modeling was all about… and oh my goodness, why did I wait!? Re-learning the new methods wasn’t too difficult, I had to be OK with taking longer to create simple shapes than what I was used to pre-update, but once the shapes were made, they could be tweaked MUCH more efficiently. The time spent ahead became well worth it for adjustability down the line (which is very useful, to me at least, in concepting and prototyping).They have since added 2 incredibly useful features for my workflow, variables and fully defined sketches. The fully defined sketches make it clear when a sketch is finally “locked.” And use quotes because it can be “locked” using a variable! Now I don’t need to go back in the sketches to make an adjustment, or find which surface to grab and change. If I plan ahead early enough or add a variable later,I can just tweak that variable to change the design. It’s a revelation, and can be quite complex with the use of formulas, or references to other variables.Anyhow, I was an adopter, then a disgruntled customer (but really I was just sloppy in my designs), then a convert! I highly recommend this app and I look forward to the upgrades they keep making.

I’ve been using Shapr3D for over a year now. Out of all the CAD programs I’ve used (Fusion, SolidWorks, CATIA) Shapr3D is the most intuitive and easy to pick up. It is limited in its capabilities. Some extrusions/loft profiles I’ve tried are just calculated better by more robust CAD programs and the lack of a threads feature is frustrating. However, what keeps me coming back to Shapr is the ease of use and seamless syncs. If I have an idea I don’t need to boot up my desktop or laptop to “jot it down”. Instead I can grab my iPad and immediately start sketching and extruding. I’m giving it 4 stars for two reasons: 1. There’s room for it to grow and it seems the devs are actively working on community requests which is excellent to see. And 2. There needs to be a hobbyist price point. Fusion is a much more powerful program that is free for most peoples CAD needs. While Shapr has a free version, it is too limited in its capabilities to compete. However, if they offered a middle tier between their $300/yr price and free with the disclaimer this can’t be used for profit or something similar, I think Shapr can really shine in that space. Allow collaboration, limit exports to STEPS, STLs, and DWG’s or something and shift a bit of focus to the hobbyist/creator community.

I’d give this a Zero, or minus 3 rating if I could. This CAD app has swallowed the “parametric” koolaide to the point it’s completely unusable by non-parametric users. WARNING: ALL of best, glowing reviews of Shapr 3D were done years ago before the Developer RE-CODED, with new confusing Parametric tools. Earlier version of Shapr 3D (2+ years ago) were very popular BUT the new version of last 1+ years is COMPLETELY different and MUCH, MUCH harder to use so IGNORE ALL the earlier positive reviews, they were based on simpler, NON-PARAMETRIC program that NO LONGER EXISTS!! WARNING: If you’re NOT already extremely familiar with convoluted processes that Parametric CAD requires this Shapr 3D will drive you insane!! the confusing linking and locking of every CAD object you make will drive you crazy! NOTE: You are FORCED to use Parametric driven tools…there is NO WAY to disable the Paramentric requirements!! WORSE: ALL the training vids are windows’s OS based so control names, images you see will leave you constantly lost when you look at your Mac OS desktop and often the included training videos run ON THE SCREEN you need to use covering up the controls you need to use, and there’s no speed control and no way to minimize the training vid. I wasted 30 hours trying to use and learn this tool. So if you’re not already very experienced w. Complex Parametric processes this app will EAT weeks and months of your time before you do anything useful
