CellWalk puts a living cell in your hands and on your desk. Zoom from a whole cell down to the atoms in DNA. Explore a cell modeled protein by protein from real structures discovered by scientists. Start your journey with Ako, an AI tutor that helps you understand what you see.
Built for students, teachers and anyone curious about how life works at the molecular scale. 2025 Apple Design Award finalist.
EXPLORE A REAL CELL
Zoom from a whole Mycoplasma cell down to single atoms. Thousands of proteins, DNA and RNA, ribosomes and membranes, rendered from published scientific data. Tap any molecule to learn what it is and what it does. Tap any term for an explanation at your level, written on your device with Apple Intelligence.
Place molecular scenes in your space with augmented reality on compatible iPhone and iPad devices.
LEARN WITH AKO
Ako helps you build understanding through questions. It brings molecular structures into view, invites you to look closer and explain what you notice, then builds on your answers to help you make connections. Socratic learning, one discovery at a time.
Type or dictate. Ask anything about what’s on screen or in your space. Your Ako lessons, your progress in them and what Ako has learned about you stay with you: on your device and, if you use iCloud, in your own iCloud. Get more of Ako with CellWalk Pro.
GUIDED TOURS
Start your journey with The Molecular Design of Life, a complete tour of the Mycoplasma cell made with Dr. David Goodsell. Each tour includes a guided narration, free explore mode and Ako practice lessons to test your understanding. CellWalk Pro adds more guided tours and lessons with an expanded library of cells and organisms. Explore the incredible molecular machines that power neurons and thought, or dive into the architecture of a virus like HIV.
LEARN BY DOING
Step into the Central Dogma of Biology with a hands-on interactive lesson on the all new Learning Path. Learn how the instructions in DNA are read and translated into the proteins that build and sustain your cells.
WHAT’S FREE
Explore The Molecular Design of Life tour and its accompanying Ako lesson and explore modes, and try the “What is a Protein?” interactive lesson on the Learning Path. You can also ask Ako in-depth questions with a free daily allowance.
CELLWALK PRO
Unlock all other guided tours and their accompanying Ako lessons, a larger daily question allowance and longer answers from Ako. Choose a monthly or annual auto-renewing subscription. One subscription covers iPhone, iPad and Mac.
ASK FROM ANYWHERE
Say “Ask CellWalk a biology question” and Siri answers from CellWalk’s own content without opening the app. “Continue my lesson in CellWalk” picks up where you left off. On iPhone and iPad, use Visual Intelligence on a textbook diagram, choose Search CellWalk with an Image, and tap a match to open that tour, lesson or molecule.
HOW THE AI WORKS
Ako is built with the Foundation Models framework. Where Apple Intelligence is available, it answers on Private Cloud Compute, and the on-device model explains the terms you tap. OpenAI, a third-party AI service, plans lessons and answers when Apple Intelligence isn’t available on your device or in your region.
The app asks your permission before sending your first question. You can change that permission under Account → Privacy. CellWalk doesn’t require a separate CellWalk account, and AI requests aren’t tied to your name. Find details under Account → Privacy → About CellWalk & AI.
Apple Intelligence features require iPhone 15 Pro or later, an iPad with M1 or A17 Pro or later, or a Mac with Apple silicon.

I’m rarely impressed by these mindful efforts to reveal the world in new ways. There are a few standouts, and this is one of them. For the first time I think I can see the steps life may have tracked to emerge into a cell as complex as this one. I’ll leave it at that. But for the future, this is an amazingly well done basis for exploring how a cell is put together. Great fundamentals. I did find the descriptions are a bit sparse, but they are well done and to the point. I can see future updates adding an “expand on” feature for a given topic. Maybe as a purchase option. But my oh my, free to download (800MB) and smooth interaction makes this a big win. Well done.
Very cool in the hands of a scientist
Senecaon
I showed this app to a friend of mine who works in the microbiology space. He loved it. He said he appreciated the fact that it seemed to be made by folks who were scientists. While he wore the headset, I followed along via airplay. He explained many concepts and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. One thing I think would add to the experience would be for the cell models to become free floating in the space as opposed to locked behind partial windows. I’ll definitely keep this app loaded for more experiences with my friend.
Amazing
iphoneloca
An engrossing app that draws you further and further in to the interior of one of the simplest cells that exists. But within this so-called simple cell, one finds illustrated with amazing complexity the truly astonishing interplay of individual cell components. I can’t wait to see more from this developer. Oh my goodness, give us a mammalian cell. Give us a cell that undergoes mitosis. Thank you so very much.
Beautiful Visualizations
MrWufz
My undergrad is in biochemistry, graduate degrees in microbiology/ biotechnology, and I’m a self-taught software engineer. This is such an awesome resource for visualizing cellular morphology (structure). It shows how dense cells are compared to traditional textbook depictions. I hope in the not too distant future we can get an update that depicts a minimal eukaryotic cell. The smallest I believe is about 25x as many base pairs of DNA.
We fixed a few bugs so your walk through the cell starts smoothly.
Plus clearer reminders about your Pro access.
CellWalk 3 brings new features and biology into your space.
• Ako, an AI tutor. Start a lesson and Ako plans a path through the cell, moves the view to what it wants you to see, asks you questions and follows your answers. Type or dictate. Ask anything, any time. Every tour now has its own Ako lesson.
• An all new hands-on interactive lesson: What is a Protein.
• Greater immersion with AR view on compatible iPhone and iPad devices.
• CellWalk Pro, a monthly or annual subscription: every other guided tour and its Ako lesson, a larger daily allowance and longer answers from Ako.
• Ako runs on Apple Intelligence where it is available: answers on Private Cloud Compute, explanations of tapped terms on your device. Elsewhere Ako answers through OpenAI. You are asked for consent before your first question is sent.
• Siri and Shortcuts: say “Ask CellWalk a biology question” for an answer without opening the app, or “Continue my lesson in CellWalk”. Every molecule, tour scene and lesson step is in Spotlight.
• Visual Intelligence on iPhone and iPad: use it on a textbook diagram and choose Search CellWalk with an Image.
• No sign-up. Your Ako lessons and what Ako has learned about you stay with you, on your device and, if you use iCloud, in your own iCloud. Delete My Data, under Account → Privacy, erases them and removes the little we hold.
• CellWalk is now on the Mac. One subscription covers iPhone, iPad and Mac.
If you bought the original CellWalk Pro, your tours stay unlocked.
