Turn meetings, interviews, podcasts, lectures, voice memos, and videos into accurate, editable text. MacWhisper is a powerful, native transcription workspace for Mac.
Choose an on-device model when privacy matters. After the model is downloaded, supported local transcription works offline and your audio stays on your Mac. When speed or a specialized model matters more, choose an optional cloud provider.
TRANSCRIBE YOUR WAY
• Drag and drop audio or video files, including MP3, WAV, M4A, MP4, MOV, OGG, and OPUS.
• Record a voice memo, an individual app, all system audio, and—when you choose—your microphone.
• Create transcripts from YouTube and direct media links.
• Batch-process multiple files, or build a podcast transcript from separate speaker tracks.
• Follow speech as it happens with live captions from your microphone, app audio, or system audio.
• Choose from local and cloud speech-recognition models, automatic language detection, and support for 100+ languages. Availability varies by model.
CLEAR MULTI-SPEAKER TRANSCRIPTS
• Identify and separate speakers with compatible models.
• Rename, merge, recolor, and quickly reassign speakers.
• Clean filler words and unwanted segments for more readable text.
EDIT, FIND, AND REVIEW
• Edit the transcript like a document, add paragraphs, adjust timestamps, and favorite important passages.
• Click text to jump to synchronized audio or video, change playback speed, and search across your transcript history.
• Translate transcripts and subtitles, with side-by-side viewing and live-caption translation where supported.
• Reopen past work, bulk-manage projects, and restore recently deleted transcripts.
GET MORE FROM EVERY RECORDING WITH AI
• Generate titles, summaries, key points, meeting notes, and action items.
• Ask questions about a transcript or run reusable custom prompts.
• Use the optional MacWhisper Assistant or connect a supported AI service with your own API key.
EXPORT AND AUTOMATE
• Export TXT, Markdown, CSV, JSON, DOCX, PDF, HTML, SRT, VTT, and Avid-compatible subtitles, plus portable Whisper project files.
• Include speakers, timestamps, word-level timing, favorite segments, and custom subtitle layouts.
• Save reusable export formats, auto-export completed work, and watch folders for new media.
• Send transcripts to Notion, Obsidian, Zapier, Make, n8n, or a custom webhook.
PRIVACY YOU CONTROL
Local transcription and supported speaker identification happen on your device. Audio or transcript text is sent off-device only when you choose a cloud transcription, translation, or AI service; that provider’s terms and privacy policy then apply.
MacWhisper is free to download. Optional Pro purchases unlock advanced Mac models and workflows. MacWhisper Assistant is an optional subscription for hosted cloud transcription and AI features; you can also use supported services with your own API keys. Features vary by device, model, provider, and purchase.
Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Manage or cancel in your App Store account settings.

After the latest update, the app started using too much CPU on my MacBook Air M2. My laptop gets very hot and drains the battery during meetings. The app has become unusable.
Upgrade is a must

App don’t export even free .txt files. If you think about using this app for free, don’t even download it. Waste of time

■ New
• Added the Claude Haiku 5.5 AI model.
■ Improvements
• Damaged recordings, such as some Microsoft Teams exports with a corrupted stretch, are now read past the damage in one pass instead of after several failed conversion attempts, so they start transcribing sooner.
• Whisper C++: Transcribes directly from your original file, without writing a temporary WAV copy first.
• Clearer errors: a file MacWhisper can't read now says "Could not open the audio file", a video without sound says "No audio track found", and an empty recording says "No audio to be read", instead of "Operation Stopped" or an error from the engine.
• Settings: Removed "Downmix audio to mono before transcription" and "Use Argmax Audio Pipeline" from Advanced settings. All local engines now share one audio decoder that always mixes multichannel audio evenly to mono, so neither option is needed.
■ Bugfixes
• Qwen3-ASR now loads on the Neural Engine on M6 Macs. An already downloaded model is patched in place.
• Fixed: Local transcription could stop before the end of some MP3 and AAC recordings, with no error. This affected variable-bitrate MP3s without a length header and raw .aac files from voice recorders.
• Fixed: WhisperKit could transcribe only part of a file, or nothing, with no error. Examples: only the first second of some screen recordings, Opus audio inside MP4 files, and files whose extension doesn't match their contents.
• Fixed: Opus recordings saved with an .mp3 extension (Plaud recorders do this) gave an empty transcript with WhisperKit and were sent to cloud providers unconverted. They are now recognised by their contents and converted like any other Ogg file.
• Fixed: Files whose first audio track is disabled, such as a muted commentary or alternate-language track, were transcribed as silence. MacWhisper now transcribes the track you hear when you play the file.
• Fixed: Ogg files with an upper-case .OGG extension failed to import on macOS 15.0 to 15.3.
• Fixed: A damaged Ogg file showed "This recording is too long to import on this version of macOS" and suggested an update that wouldn't help. It now says the file can't be opened.
• Fixed: Temporary audio copies made for transcription could linger in the app's storage instead of being removed afterwards.
